One of the cheapest ways I've seen to control a thermofan is to use one of these:

You can use the ECU thermosensor voltage to switch the fan at any temp. I don't like thermoswitches that don't directly sense coolant temp (just radiator surface temp) but I also don't like the ones with sensors you have to poke under the radiator hose. This way solves both problems.

I used the cheap non-adjustable probe switch from a parts store.
I positioned the probe through the radiator fins just below the hose inlet.
I used a relay to carry the load, and a diode from the AC clutch to turn on the fan when the AC was running. Power was directly from the battery, through a circuit breaker.

Under $40, simple, rock solid reliable.

The only trick is the switch-off cool down can mess with some alarm systems.

Cheap will get you unreliable.
Do you really want to trust your cooling system to something unreliable?

The wires connections are the circuit board pull out or come loose.
I seen it first hand with hIGGI's ****.

I've had bad experiences with those generic probe-in-rad-core thermostat controllers too - I had one until it died and prevented the fan from turning on.

I had terrible experiences with the flex-a-lite thermostat switch. It would not work properly from the day I got it. I finally bought a generic one and it worked beautifully and I've never had a single issue with it.

I've had a Flex-A-Lite thermo switch fail also, after about 3 months use.
The cheap simple parts store thermo switch was working for 2 years when I sold the car.

I've seen those switches fail like crazy. My friend had a 240SX with one and it was dead when he got the thing.

I just let the MegaSquirt control my fans

I still can't remember. It was a generic one from some online parts store. I thought it was summit racing, but I did a search on there and the one I have doesn't seem to be present anymore.
