E fan question

I have searched for two days and still cant get this to work. On wednesday night on my way home from work i noticed the temp was climbing, it was right around half way, which is high. I got home opened the hood and ran some water over everything, the fan had never come on. Next day i tested the fan by taking the two wires coming out of it and putting them on the battery, and it worked. Next is the **** poor wiring and relay from the previous owners messy t2 swap.

Have brand new wire and a relay. I wired the 30 post on the relay to the battery positive terminal.
The 85 post is grounded to the frame.
The 87 goes with the power to the fan
and the 86 i have linked to the other wire from the fan, spliced with the 12v power from the coils so the fan would come on when i put the key in the ignition, which was how it was always set up.

Needless to say no matter what i do I cant get it to work, I have switched things around and I am stumped.

85/86 is the control circuit. Apply power to one terminal, switch ground to the other. You could also do like you are and ground one side and apply power to the other... to each their own.

30/87 is the controlled side, or the side that's being turned on. Apply power to one side, power comes out of the other when the relay is energized.

If you're still having problems with it, you may have a burned up relay or fuse. Get a test light and verify power and ground in all the right spots.
