Are Dynos safe if you just bought a used car?

i just bought an 88' vert, everything is stock, might have some problems i have overlooked.. Someone told me i should do a dyno test before having new products put on (like cats, exhausts, filters, etc) why is it necessary? and do you think dynos might do more harm? and i can do dyno tests where? any car shops?

I'd drive your car for a little while first. if it's not running good you could do some damage on the dyno doing full thottle runs. there isn't really any point either. you have to find a shop that has a dyno, not many do, and it's not that cheap to use.

dyno would be a waste of money on a stock car. You would be taking a gamble. It might not tell you what is wrong. Just ask questions around here and people will be able to help you out.
What are the symptoms? Do a full tune up on the car first so you know when things have been changed.

if the dyno operator knows what he is doing and has all the proper equipment it should not be a problem to run the car on a dyno. If the car is stock and not running very well I would spend my money on getting the car running good before testing it on the dyno. After some modifications it might be good to run it on the dyno to see what improvements have been made, but there is not anything to be gained unless the dyno shop can reprogram the ECU. the only thing you will get is a nice readout of the HP. if one of your upgrades is a stand alone EFI system then the dyno is almost a necessity. probably best to spend the money getting the car running as best you can.

I would assume whoever told you to get it dynoed was telling you that to establish a baseline, Before you did any mods to see how much the mods added in horsepower..so you would actually know what they did instead of guessing.
But If it isnt running right I would get it running right before i dynoed it...then do a base line then mod and dyno after each part....but that is really if you want to know what the mods added seperatly..i would just mod it and then dyno it..or dyno before mods then dyno after mods to see what all of them together added...but it is up to you.
