Dyno results for the GTUs.

Yo,

I went to the Bay Area Dyno Day and GTG on Saturday. Here's what I put down on the Dynojet:

1st run: Max Power: 140.8 Max Torque: 113.6

2nd run: Max Power: 140.3 Max Torque: 115.1

3rd run: Max Power: 140.6 Max Torque: 114.6

All runs were done in 3rd gear. Max power was at 7,000 rpm. Max torque was around 4,750 rpm.

The A/F meter said I was running a little bit lean in the midrange, and rich up top.

I wish I had a scanner, you can definitely see the VDI spike when it comes on around 6,400rpm.

I don't know if these numbers are horrible, mediocre or average. With a 20% driveline loss, it looks like I've got 175 at the crank? So 15 more than stock with the following mods. I'm horrible at math. *grin*

Mods:

Stock internal 13B w/60K miles.
Greddy Airinx cone filter
Racing Beat downpipe w/presilencer (no cats)
HKS 50mm catback exhaust
6 ports wired open
VDI working

Check your math

X = FlyWhp

X - .2X = 140.8

.8X = 140.8

140.8/.8 = X

X = 176hp

--------------------------------Edit-----------------------------------

DAMNIT you JUST editted you post didn't you!! Good Math.

20% is a bit too much.&nbsp Try 15%...
That pegs you at a more believable 165hp at the flywheel.

Yo,

Ted, how could all those mods only net me 5 more HP that the stock 160? I thought getting rid of the cats was some huge power gain for a rotary. Say it ain't so!

Where'd you go to get the dyno run?&nbsp If it was a DynoJet, you could've done a real drivetrain friction run "down"...

Yo,

It was ATP, Advanced Tuning Products in Fremont.

Felix: It was made in Japan, they do their best all week in Hiroshima! So every RX-7 is a Wednesday car! *Phhbbbttt!!*

The VDI comes on at about 5200 or so...
You can see a tiny flat spot on the chart- I guarantee it's there.
That spike at 6400? Well, I felt that too on my car, it's in the stock fuel programming. It's where the factory fuel mapping goes from crazy rich in the midrange (for reliability) to a more power-freindly ratio.
This bump dissapeared completely for me when I leaned the S-AFC down a bit in the midrange. It's now much more powerfull in the midrange.
OF course, you said yours ran lean in the midrange.... weird to see that.

Ok...
What did your A/F chart look like?
What were the lean and rich ratios that you saw?

I read that the engines were handbuilt. You probably had a newbie building your motor.

How about this...
I know you drag race your car - what kinda trap speeds are you running?&nbsp Can you give us the 60' times in addition to the trap speeds?

Rarest RX what are your mods?
i ran 142hp on my 91 NA with Racing beat Dp, Mid, and catback
also had an open air box and electric fan installed.

ive heard stock NA put down about 125
if u are getting 140 that doesnt look stock
and also why did u do it in 3rd gear, 4th gear
USUALLY gives a more accurate reading

Why was it done in 3rd gear? wouldn't 4th be more of a true reading of the engine?

Well you can only go up from here. As you recall, Silver88GXL had the same HKS catback and RB presilencer as yours, but he had port sleeves and airpump removed and TB mod to net him 161rwhp.

RarestRX. Scan your dyno sheet. I think you have the same problem as Kahren! If your curve is normal, and then spikes up at 6400. That's probably a VDI valve that is slow moving. Kahren has the same exact problem. Look at my car, i made 141.4rwhp in 3rd (143 in 4th). I get my VDI kick at 5300, not 6400. You can tell there were 2 dip at the hp line. One is 3800 (secondary, 6 port) the other is 5400 or so (VDI). So my guess is to clean out your VDI. I think that is the problem.

www.geocities.com/tmak26b/90dyno3a.jpg

As for my car, it has 161K. 90 GXL 2+2, RB cat back, Bonez cat, custom cut airbox, mazdaspeed wires (okay they are really taylor wires, but i bought it from them) and a stock type K&N filter. I will have a 1/4 time within 2 weeks. So cast your vote right now

4th gear put too much strain on the NA motor. Also the reading becomes very choppy

Bambam, you ever dyno your car? You know the kick at 6500. I feel that too, but on the dyno sheet. You can clearly see my VDI comes in at 5200. Sometimes what your feel is different than what it is.

Yo,

Ted: I haven't drag raced it since I wired the 6 ports open. My times and trap were terrible. With the 6 ports wired, it should be hopefully much faster.

To everyone else: I woulda scanned it iffin' I had a scanner! *grin*

I will try and get it scanned, but no way am I goin' to Kinko's and payin' 5 bucks for it. Any RX-7 owners in Sac wanna come pick up my dyno sheet?

I don't have in front of me now, but when I get home I will post what the A/F numbers were.

Or maybe the RB presilencer just cause problems. Someone supply 100 bucks and a RB silencer and pipe. I will go to the dyno again :P

Yo,

Okay BamBam, lemme try and describe this:

AF Ratio is on the left

RPM is on the bottom.

AF goes from 18 to 10. I have no idea if those are percentages, stoich, or what.

RPM goes from 2.5 to 8.5.

At 4,000rpm AF is 13
At 4,500rpm AF is 13.5
At 5,000rpm AF is 14
At 5,500rpm AF is 14
At 6,000rpm AF is 13.5
At 6,500rpm AF is 13
At 7,000rpm AF is 12.5
At 7,500rpm AF is 12
At 8,000rpm AF is 11

Hope you can decipher that!

Looks about right then lean then about right then rich, those #'s are stoich. so ya 7k and past it needs to be leaned out, u could get some more hp by doing that there.

Wow!!
I don't know if other will disagree with me, but that is very odd to see!!
The stock fuel maps usually run pretty rich in the midrange!
My guesses:
I'm guessing your power curve looked pretty flat from 4500 to 6500?
DO you have pretty good mid-low power?
I'd say you maybe have a fuel pressure regulator problem...
I don't know.
I'd say maybe dirty injectors, but that doesn't explain the rich running up high (a little more normal)
Of course, I've seen lots of different results, but that's the first car I've seen that runs so lean in the midrange!

One more question- How much power are you putting out at 4500??

Thanks for posting those for me man!
