dumbass dropped something into the water jacket... easy fix?

So, say this guy was tapping out the rear water temp sensor hole and decided to see how deep the hole was to avoid damaging anything in the block. To do this, this guy used a metal rod about 4-5" long and about as big a round as a metal coat hanger. Lets pretend this rod slipped (due to tap oil on his fingers) and dissapeared into the hole bouncing around to the bottom, how would he get this out? Or should he say screw it and leave it in there assuming that it is too long to work its way into any small passages and too small in diameter to really block anything up?

1. It will probably be pushed around until it got stuck in a coolant passage and you wont get it out (without teardown)

2. It could get sucked into your waterpump (wp failure but you get the metal out)

3. Gets sucked into radiator see above.

Numero Uno is most likely, why would you do something like this anyway?

I have a screw driver like thing. There is a small magnet on the tip and it will extend to about 3ft. Its pretty handy if you drop a bolt, or say a metal pipe If you havent run or moved the car, id suggest picking up something similar and see if you can pull it back out. Ive done something like this atleast 10 times

Get a monster shop vac!

But make sure you think about what you will try first! Because your first impulsive attempts could make it go deeper quick.

Good luck.

You could get a fiber optic scope to take a look in there.
Try going to an aircraft repair area. They have those bore scopes.

dr0x,
I've tried that. The problem with the magnet trick is that the entrance hole is horizontal to the jacket and there are a couple curves in the way of me getting a straight shot to the rod.

suds7,
Let me know what you think after looking at your housings. Thanks for the ideas.

Leave it in. Nothing will happen. Ever seen the **** that just resides at the bottom of coolant passages during a rebuild?

All I foresee happening right now is a block getting left with 6 magnets, a pair of tweezers, and several different parts to a analog watch getting left in the motor.

Do you think maybe a strong enough magnet could pull the rod to the top from the outside? Like sliding the magnet on the outside of the motor. Not sure how thick the motor is in that section.

Its out... Thanks for all the ideas. The Snap-On truck came by today and I found a small magnet attached to a copper rod that was bendable. After about 15 minutes it did the trick...
