Dumb tranny q: What is the opening in the bellhousing?

Ok, this is probably a stupid question, but here goes:

I just took my engine and tranny out, mounted the engine on the stand, etc.

I was looking at the tranny sitting there, and I'm trying to figure out what the square opening in the bellhousing is. It's on the opposite side of the bellhousing from the starter, and it looks like it's always open, but I'm sure it's not, since that would leave the clutch exposed.

So, what is it?

I believe its there to allow clutch dust to escape. The fork opening should have a rubber boot covering the hole and is on the same side of the starter. The opening on the opposite side shouldn't have anything in it.

Yah, I think that's it, since it's not the fork opening. It's really just open all the time? That seems weird to me.

Clutch inspection hole. It should have a metal shield/plate that covers it up when it is installed.
