Dumb question

Ok i've torn thru fc's for the past 5 yrs of my life but i've NEVER done anything with the timing. I just got a timing light for it but it was used so no instructions and the haynes manual says nothing about how to properly hook it up. I have aligned everything and know how to adjust the crank angle sensor but need to know how to correctly hook up the timing light. someone please explain, thanks!

Put the red gator clip on the positive battery cable. Put the negative gator clip on the negative battery cable. Clip the inductor over the L1 plug wire. Aim the light at the main E-shaft pulley timing pin. Pull trigger and make sure the mark lines up with the pin (should be the first mark).

Yeah I know they said to line up the yellow mark for leading and red for trailing. When you say hook it up to L1 plug wire, you mean over the insulation and everything?

Unless you have an in-line timing light (those are pretty rare), you clip that large clip over the L1 plug wire, insulation and all!
