dtss stuck, wtf?

ok, so i got some dtss eliminators but i can't get the damn bolts out. i searched and searched but all the threads and writeups i found never mentioned any trouble with this bolt. on one side the bolt turns about 1/4 turn, then springs back if i let go. on the other side, i can't move it at all. i sat on it for a minute straight with a 350 ft-lb impact gun after it sat overnight with pb blaster in it, and still nothing.

am i missing something? the **** does NOT want to come out.

running out of money and time, so i have this, all it needs is a clutch and it's ready to go in.

but yea, i dunno what's up with the dtss. i'll let it soak in more pb blaster tonight and see how tomorrow is. you'd think 350 ft lbs would be enough to break the rust though...

Any old bolt can rust and cause trouble. A google search can tell you how to remove a stuck bolt. One extreme measure is to drill it out and replace it.

One method I use is to clamp down a vise grip REALLY tight onto the bolt head and then hammer at it. But if you clamp it down too soft and hammer too hard you'll strip the bolt head and then you'll really be in trouble. Really long handled torque wrenches are nice too. I have no problem pulling over 150 ft-lbs. on even a small one. And it's continuous not impact. But again don't let it slip off the bolt or you could strip it.
Nice engine, btw. I'm not a fan of american V8's but that one is a definate exception.

eh i guess i'll put it in the vice and try a 24" breaker. maybe continuous torque is the trick.

(all my suspension is off the car btw)

The DTSS bushing consists rubber sandwiched between inner and outer steel sleeves. Your problem is that the inner steel sleeve has rusted to the bolt. You need burn the rubber bushing with a propane torch while turning the bolt out. The rubber is going to smoke like a mf, so do this in a well ventilated area.

ahh this sounds good. it could explain why i could turn one bolt but it was springing back. i knew it was something like i was just twisting the rubber, and not actually turning the bolt out.

we'll find out tonight.

You might also need to buy new bolts from the dealer. I remember that I had a hell of a time getting that rusted sleeve off the bolt. The bolt shafts were in pretty sad shape too. It is always a good idea to put antiseize on the bolts when reassembling.

well, using the 24" breaker did the trick. i tore the bolt/center sleeve free of the outer sleeve. but now the outer sleeve is stuck. *sigh*

looks like i'll need to take it to a shop
