Thumbs up dsm guy looking to buy a 2g turbo rx7

Yeah thats right Im a eclipse gst guy looking for a 2g rx7. The eclipse now is a mid 14 second car and has been good to me for 3years, never broken down but I just like rx7s. My dad has a 86 rx7 with a 350 in it. That thing runs low 11s.

Anyways I was looking for a 90-92 turbo model. My ?s are how reliable is the rx7. People say that they are not reliable but I dont listen to dick heads. I believe a car is good to you if your good to it. I do know about the coolant seals do. Can I upgrade them some how. Any input will be great

Ps Im not going to put a 350 in it

Those people would be right. As much as we like to defend them, the sad fact is they aren't very reliable. You can treat it as good as you want, it'l still **** you up the *** from time to time.

Well if you have a DD on the side, and some spare cash, by all means go get one. I'm just saying don't go buying one thinking that you can have a budget for it. It's not your grandma's honda civic, where you can drive it for 300K miles and expect to do nothing to it. Turbo motors in general only last around 125K miles. Even less when modified.

Yeah I hear you. I would be expecting this kind of talk from a honda boy. Not trying to bash but when I go to honda forums thats all I hear. Dsm are bad dont buy them. I never had a problem with mine and it never walked.
Anyways what happens to the engine. I know the thing doesnt just die.

I think it does "just die", in terms of the engine eating an apex seal. but oil and water seals deteriorate over time.

Jeez, talk about a one sided arguement. My DSM breaks every day, and my daily driver is my turbo rx7, go figure... They're only as reliable as you treat it and the person who had it before you treated it, i think that's what most people seem to be forgetting.

I'm at 115k miles with original engine in my 89 turbo. only problem I've had in 4 years (30k miles) was a leaky rad.

My 88 Turbo2 had 140k miles on it, with a good bit of performance upgrades. Previous owner did not have a FCD, and it hit fuel cut all the time. Was starting to show signs of low compression, but still for 140k miles and being beat on, the thing still ran strong.

Rx7's are extremly reliable when they are properly maintained. There are N/A owners that have over 200k on there engines, and turbo owners that have over 150k. These ppl either bought one that was well taken car of or are good rotary mechanics and know how to take care of there cars.
Those who mod incorrectly and beat the living crap out of there cars or had a previous owner that did will be the ones you will mostly hear have problems with there car.

Be smart, get info, do research and know what your getting into before buying.
Good luck.

As long as you don't overheat the Rx, the coolant seals should be just fine. If you do over-heat the car, or you consistently over heat the car, the seals will get consistently worse until it's no longer drivable... It doesn't take much to get the Turbo cars in the 13's (although not quite as easy to hit 11's like your dad, lol). Make sure you remain patient when looking around, until you find something you really like. Oh, make sure to check the compression on the motor too before purchasing (pretty important).

Thanks for the inputs, what should the compression be around
