my rx-7 was in louisiana (I was in austin, tx). I took greyhound to new orleans and drove it back. it had 120k miles at the time. I would never do it again, though.

it doesn't have a/c.

 

If it's in decent shape, it will make it.
I put ~100 miles a day on my N/a (to and from school), and she still runs rock solid.

 

you don't need a/c that what rolling the windows down are for, and the sunroof open. I've taken my 90GTU on many trips that are 8+ hours, all without a/c and 2 trips between Wichita,KS and Augusta,GA which is a 20 hour trip either way no a/c, and the latest was from Augusta, to Texarkana. my car love the open road even at 150K miles on it.

 

I drove my N/A FC from London, Ontario to Halifax, Nova Scotia and back a few years ago. That's 18 hrs each way, kids. It was a great drive, plus there was this stretch of highway in Quebec where I got to drive like a maniac (because everyone else was) and open it up. That was the fastest I'd ever driven (180 Km/H), and it was a thrill.

Only downside: One of my fuel injectors died on the way back, and the car stalled literally at the end of the offramp back into London (with a tow truck magically getting off the highway right behind me).

 

When i baught my car i flew to vancouver BC from Prince Albert Sk, and drove her back.. that is a 22hr drive over 2000km's! I say do it, you will get used to your car that way and you will know that way what you will want to do with it!

 

lets all go on a big road trip and meet in the middle of the U.S.!!!

In addition to being a RX-7 it is also, just a car. It has four wheels on it too. So go drive the thing!

Just 3 weeks ago I drove my 91 n/a from Kansas City to Mobile Alabama. It was a 16 hour drive and I spent 3 hours of Mississippi interstate at 88 mph with cruise control. No problems what-so-ever. My 88 SE was a daily driver from Biloxi, MS to Mobile, AL and that is 60 miles each way. The car finally died at 255,000 miles due to the water pump failing. I put 30,000 miles on my 90 GTU the first year I owned it w/o any problems... I have complete faith in 2nd gen RX-7s.

Damn, and I thought driving mine 400 mi. was a lot!

 

I drove 400 miles too and damn was it uncomfortable !

 

I'd say dont drive it unless you know a good bit about repairing
RX7's. Becuase if you have problems your not going to find a
shop that can repair it.

 

I just bought an '86 Sport (125k) from a relative in Florida. I fixed it up a bit down there (hoses, oils, filters, etc) over a few days and drove it a touch over 800 miles home yesterday. It was acting kinda funny from not being on the highway for a while, but it made it just fine.

 

the maintenance is the big issue.....I have an 86 GXL. In the last couple weeks, I just put new tires on it, as well as an o2 sensor, wipers, tune up, oil change, some new engine grounds, and gave it a good once-over on all fluids. I just drove it about 900 miles yesterday(moved from Kansas to Louisiana) and it didnt skip a beat. Also--be SURE to check out your o2 sensor.....that is the only thing I changed last week, and I am now getting 24 miles per gallon!!! (was only getting like 17-18 before and that was still with all highway driving). The old one looked like it was the original haha

It was a killer ride!! Especially when I came across this ugly orange Prelude that wanted to mix it up.....and he got a good view of my tail lights....oh, and JPA--I have the Sirius radio in mine too....didnt touch a cd the whole trip!

 

That's a really gutsy move, rotary racerrx. You don't even know the REAL condition of the vehicle.

Though it's 50K on the ROTARY (anything could happen, it's 12 year old car and just by sitting fuel line could be brittle, vaccume line may not be reliable) , have you had a chance to check it out or have someone checked it out?

Personally, not knowing the condition of the 7, I would not recommend rely on the vehicle for short ride, let alone 1,000 miles.

Have it shipped for the price of gas/travel cost you'll be spending and you won't be disappointed.

And just in case you are driving 1,000 miles make sure you'll have fire extinguisher in it.

 

My 10AE had 12000 when I went to go pick it up in Kansas. Drove it 800 miles back to Indiana, and everythign was fine. She was in need of a long road trip, and she got it. Go for it!

 

I should have done that when I brought mine up. After I drove the 800some miles back from Florida, I started smelling gasoline the next day. The pulsation damper replacement banjo bolt is on two week backorder from Summit, so I'm driving with a fire extinguisher wedged behind the passenger seat.

It would have sucked to have the car burst into flames 400 miles from home.

 

My stereo doesn't work right now either, so I drove the whole way in silence.

 

I drove mine on a long trip to pick it up, but I was picking it up from a family member. If you don't really know for sure the car is reliable, have a back-up plan in case something goes wrong during your long trip. The $650 is probably the lower-risk way to go..

 

I picked up my 3rd RX-7(my GTUs) from colorado. Took a 23 hour bus ride there, and drove 1100 miles back... in 19 hours, at 4000 rpms, with RB headers and a rotary performance catback(loudest exhaust I've ever heard next to corksport single). That was a trip, lemme tell you. =P The engine will love you for it though, provided it's in proper mechanical condition. I'd say fly or take a bus out there and drive it back!

For what its worth, I used to take my rex on short road trips nightly. To either New Castle, Gillette, Wall, Murdo, or Siuox Falls. Usually spent 250 miles a night on the road average just because I wanted to get out.

 

I took my T2 from Cincinnati to the 12 hrs of Sebring in Florida this last March. About 1000 miles each way. Drove it down straight through by myself. I do know my 7 enough that I took tools, plugs, oil, coolant, a spare water pump belt, duct tape, and a flashlight. All of it easily fit in the bins. I did have two problems. A slight leak in one of the oil cooler fittings got worse so I coated my car with a couple of quarts of oil on the way back. Also, I stopped at a rest stop to **** and when I got back in the car it would not start. After an hour of trouble shooting, I found the fuel pump wiring had come loose at a connection I made when installing the Haltech. Still, I had a blast and got 20mpg.

My car has been many things to me over the years. The first mods were all about handling for autocross at the expense of ride. Next came power improvments at the expense of reliability for road course use. I have decided now that it is to be my exclusive Grand Touring car so I am going to detune a little, drive it all over creation and enjoy it. You should too.
