Driving long distances with an FC?
 

I'm thinking about purchasing a '91 N/A RX, but the problem is that it's 1000 miles from me. :banghead: I was thinking about going there with a rental car, dropping the rental off, and driving the 7 back home. The car has 50k on the engine, and I know that's low, but I dunno if a trip like that would be hard on it. Should I just have it shipped for $650?:piss: Will it really be that much worth it in the future if I have it shipped? Let me know what you think.

after i had my FC for a week, i took it on a trip to ottawa..

not sure how many KMs it was, but both ways summed up musta been over 1200.

figure the costs in. 650 ain't bad compared to the cost of the rental plus gas plus the gas for the trip home and a motel.

If I was going to drive it back I'd just fly up and drive it back rather than rent a car and drive up and back. It won't be hard on the car to drive 1000 miles no, but it would be hard on you. Depends on what your time is worth. I'd guess 350-450 to rent a car and do the driving thing up and back.

i drove to atlanta (from louisville kentucky) which is about an 8-9 hr drive to pickup my first turboII. we picked up a rental, drove to ATL, and drove the turboII home.

I've driven my FC over 1,500 miles for around $150 total :)

You will find out all the problems that the car has the more you ride in it....

I drove from p-cola Fl to nashville, picked up some stuff, then drove to memphis, spent the night and drove back thru mississippi to p-cola with a stop for most of the day in newOrleans!, So 7hours+3hours plus sleep, 9hours+4hours, and then back home in 2days.

I bought my convertible in Phoenix and flew in from Las Vegas where I live to pick it up.
300 miles and 5 hours of driving was a good way to get to know the car.

i drove my seven from oregon to texas to Wilson, NC then back up to oregon.......i drove from omaha nebraska to portland in one shot......like 1700 miles in something like 23 hours......just stop for gas and piss....so trust me...she can handle it.....and mine has 85k on the clock.....so ull be alright

Now i wanna go on a ROAD TRIP!!!

Go for the ride - but do take a basic tool kit & a roaming cell phone to handle any surprises.
Of course give it a good inspection before leaving.

take the trip. my first RX-7 was a highway car, the previous owner drove it mostly between Connecticut and South Carolina for the majority of it's life. When i did a compression check at 168K miles i got 125 and 110 psi, front and rear respectively.

Don't worry about the car, you might be more worried about the gas that it's going to take getting back. Other than that enjoy the ride, it is summer after all. :)

go for it :) I've done over 30 road trips in my 91 n/a...that is 30 separate 8 hour trips (to and from college)...flawless every time...

Drove the T2 on one non-stop 15 hour drive...bringing it home :)

it's what your time is worth! but that's up to you. $650 is cheap by the way.

i bought my fc in north carolina and i live in massachusetts. took a road trip down overnight in another car with a friend, then drove the two back. killed me on gas money paying for two gas guzzlers on the way back, but god it was worth it!

I have drove my 1988 1oth Anniversary TII all the way to Milwaukee, WI from home (Asheville, NC) once, and all the way to Jacksonville, FL twice. And the week of my B-Day I am taking it all the way down to Miami, FL. I dont think I would take any other car on a road trip. Its so much fun to be crusing down the interstates and have some local Hondas come up on you wanting to play. And being a chick makes it even better! :D

i bought my 87 gxl from a friend that lived in arizona. I flew out there and stayed with him for a couple days, then the 2 of us made a 1300 mile trip in one day. a couple stops for gas and food, and slow driving in a horrible storm. took us 23 hrs. oh, we also took a detour up to the grand canyon before the trip to dallas.

anyways, the car did great, minus a little problem with the coolant, but my friend didn't use the air bleeder plug when he filled it up. so that was an easy fix. but the car did great, had 78k on the odometer when we made the trip. i say either fly out there, or do your car rental thing, and have a fun road trip. take a friend too.

2 months ago, i took my FC to the mazda dealer for a compression test since i got a good deal out of it. later when i picked my car up, the old man says, "why did u do this compression test? is there anything wrong?"
then i said...."sometimes it feels laggy and it's like one of the rotor is not working all right."
then he says, "nope! everything is working just fine. nothing is the problem. nice compression numbers yada yada. u know what you should do? take that bitch out for a drive. drive down the country road. rev the engine. this engine is meant to be driven and raced."

listen to the old man and nothing will go wrong. :D

dont mean to thread hijack but what air bleeder plug on the coolant......and is that what that laggy feel is on my motor.....kinda like a skip...bad compression?

probably not. all the air bleeder plug does, is to prevent air bubbles/pockets from forming when completely filling the radiator with coolant/water. it would be on the passenger side of the stock radiator if you have it. both my 87 and 88 rx7's had it on the stock radiator.

I live in Boston, and bought my 7 from a guy in southwest Ohio. About 850 miles.

Flew out there, then drove it back over the course of a day and a half. The car made it just fine

bought my 88 vert in July locally, and haven't gone too far, maybe yesterday's trip to Boca from Hollywood (35 miles 1 way) was the farthest. I am taking it to Naples tomorrow in anticipation of a ride to Atlanta and Asheville next week to run it on the Blur Ridge Parkway. Unfortunately my Nextel cell phone is less reliable than the car LOL but it seems to be running great this week.

I just drove from Miami to TN and back.... across the Blue Ridge mountains, top down, satellite radio blasting, a great 5 days....
