Drag Shifitng
Ive got a 90 vert. 110k miles on it in good running condition and all. I just got it so I haven’t had allot of experience with it, (and to be honest I can’t say anyone has showed me how to drag race) so I don’t know what is a proper rpm to shift. The previous owner put an aftermarket TAC with a shift indicator (witch you can set to tell you when to shift at a certain rpm). Anyway I don’t want to ramble but, he had it set at about 6k rpm or so... now... Mazda says that the non turbo FC new off the showroom floor's HP peak was at 7k rpm... now... would it make sense to shift at 7k rpm or should you ride the gear out to the red line? (Witch is 9k I think)
When I first really got on the engine, right when I got the car, the shift light startled me so I shift when it told me to. But it seems like the car should be faster then it is when I shift when the tac tells me too.
What am I doing wrong?

your using a monster rice tac for a non-modded n/a......thats whats wrong there is no point in that at all. So remove the Tac..... When I had my n/a I used to shift right around 7900 or so...and it was pretty much pulled great up till then. Past 8k it kinda died down.....

No one can really tell you when the best place to shift is, the peak power can be in slightly different places depending on the car and the mods. The best thing to do would be to get your car dynoed, then look at the graph to see where you are making power, and where you stop making power.
In my 91 FC I used to have, when it was totally stock it stopped making power above 6500. Granted, it could go to 9000, but there was no point since I was making less power. So I would shift around 6500, it would drop it down to 4k, and all was well. After I did intake and exhaust, that shifted the power band a bit, and 7500 was the best place to shift.

If you are a little worried upgrade the axels. prettyy much just use your judgement

You'd be surprised how much fun a 'vert can be as it is.
