double clutched next to a Porche, now my speedo doesn't work?
I down-shifted into 3rd on the highway and got up next this guy in an early 90's Porche. I was just messing around and I double clutched next to him. A couple minutes later I realize my speedometer wasn't working... I got off the next exit and realized my power-steering wasn't working either... I got to my destination a few minutes away with no problems. All the fuses are fine under the hood, the car runs just fine (and stays running), the only thing is, is that my 'room' fuse was blown (I changed it). I drove it for about a half an hour after this with no problems, but neither power steering or my speedo working. Is this an electrical problem, or could I have some how damaged my speedo cable, or the sensor? ANY help would be greatly appreciated.

I have seen the cable become loose in both places. Mainly because of rough driving/roads or because a lot of street racing. The resulting vibrations and jerking could cause either end to become loose. Also, sometimes the speedometer cable just gets screwed in lightly when doing transmission work. It should be turned 1.5 times I believe with an adjustable wrench or something.

I think the synchros are ok. Sometimes I have trouble going from neutral to 5th, and downshifting to 2nd...
I was just messing with the porche, trying to see if he'd go. Ya know, jumping ahead a little bit, falling back...
So yeah, speedo and power steering stopped functioning.

thanks for the advice acidshock.
What's weird is that all of this happened at the same time, blown room fuse, loss of power-steering and loss of speedometer. I'm positive these weren't cingular occurances that just happened randomly at the same time... I don't know, I'm a noob.

Most likely the speedo cable came loose behind the gauge cluster. It's happened to me before. Easy way to check is to look in your engine bay and give the speedo cable a little tug away from the firewall to see if there is any resistance or not. It's easier to check than getting under the car but might as well check that too.
About the power steering I believe on s5's had speed sensitive power steering, not positive on that one. I think s4's had engine speed sensitive power steering. Anybody confirm this?

i think alot of people confuse the term double clutching....a lot of ppl I know think double clutching is when you are WOT then you shove in the clutch(example at around 4K RPM) while still WOT which brings ur RPMs up and gives you a "boost" supposedly. The term double clutch, TO ME, means driving------->pushing in the clutch -->put car in neutral....depress clutch.......push clutch in again and then shift into the desired gear. Am I wrong?

I would say most likely it came out from the bottom.... Ive had both cars and power steering still worked after the speedocable came off.... usually if you drag the speedo cable after it coming off, you will need a new one.....unless the worm is this there and the fiting is fine...

My speedo cable came loose when I was flushing out the cooling system (must've accidentally pulled it out while working under the hood). Anyways, mine came loose from behind the dash. Instead of taking the dash apart, I just pushed the seat back, got on my back and put my arm up around where the pedals are and pushed the cable back to where it connects to the dash. I didn't have to fish around much to connect it, it sorta knew where to go. Afterwards, I popped the hood and ghetto-taped (with black duct tape) where the cable meets the firewall, so I don't accidentally disconnect it again.

Yeah, I must've 'clutch kicked'.
I was driving to work today when I heard a clunking noise. I looked in my rear-view mirror and saw a nice piece of cable flopping around behind my car before watching it disapear into the traffic behind me. I got off on the next exit and low and behold there was a cable (or at least part of one) dragging innocently on the ground under my car. The fitting on the end was pretty banged up and I'm guessing that the cable I lost on the freeway was an extention of this. Shoot... Anyways I'm waiting for a picture to be approved by the forum, of the dragging speedo-cable. Does anyone have any suggestions on what piece I might've lost and how to replace it?
Thanks for the responses.
