Door lock schematic??

The outside, driver side door handle on my 1988 RX SE broke about 5 or 6 years ago so I took it apart to try to fix it (JBWeld). It didn't work so for the last 5 years I've been using the passenger side to open the driver's door. I finally got a new handle from Mazdatrix and installed it a couple days ago. Fan-freakin-tastic! BUT!

Drats! I think something is missing.

The door lock works fine from the inside but using the key to lock/unlock does not work. I think there's a 6" vertical rod missing from the mechanism but after 5 years I can't remember what I did with it or if it was even there in the first place. Although, it must have been.

The PDF shop manual (14_BODY.pdf) doesn't show, or explain, any of that mechanism at all and I can't find a PDF parts manual. If I could identify what is missing and what the parts manual calls it I might be able to ask if anybody has one.

Also, even with the glass out, working on the inside of those doors (locks/handles) is worse than building a ship in a bottle. It is almost impossible. Is there some trick to make it easier? Are there some particular cuss words that help? A couple more hours of this and I might need to see a mental help professional.

Thanks for any help.

Don

Have you compared your broken side with your other side?

Thanks, but those manuals just don't show a very good view of that door lock stuff. I know what I need, I just don't know how to describe it to someone else. I thought I could point to the manual and say "I need No 16 on Pg 21-4".

I'm sure I have the rod that I need around here someplace . . . I just need to find it. It might be easier to buy a whole new door.

Thanks,

Don

Thanks Evil. I think that first picture shows the threaded end of the main rod that goes from the inside door handle to the latch. I believe it's the one that pops the door open when you pull the inside door handle.

The one that I seem to be missing is the short (apx 6 inch) rod that unlocks the door when you turn the key.

If I can't find the old one around here, I'll probably spend another 5 years getting in through the passenger side.

Thanks,

Don

BTW: I think Obama meant no tax increase on income below $250

Ah, I think that is the one closer to the door jamb. Sorry, but I don't have a picture of that one.

I believe the president 100%, which is why I have included his great words in my signature. Never in a million years would he go back on his word, so I am sure that I can keep this signature for the rest of my life.
