door handle rod question
i'm trying to get my door handle off on my 88 t2, got the two main bolts after removing the panel and all that crap, removed the rod that goes to the lock... now what the hell is holding the other rod in place? It curves around the whole handle and I can't see how the thing comes out, don't want to snap it off by pushing it around in the wrong angle or something, whats the trick?

Well the other rod is held in by a plastic snapping clamp like thing. Fixing a door handle is a pain in the ***. I did it the other day. It took me 2 hours to do it with the window kept up. If you have smaller hands, it's easier to do, but most people don't. If you have a replacement door handle, you can see how the clamp holds the rod you're talking about. I don't have a picture of it. It's really hard to get off if you don't know how to unclamp it. So do you have the handle partially hanging off, outside of the door then? Was one of your bolts holding the handle in broken?

to answer this threads question, if you lower the window all the way you have a really good view of the plastic peice that holds the door latch rod to the lever that is on the handle assembly, a flat blade screwdriver can unlatch the plastic peice and the handles free from the rod.

The Cause of Death
Ah... I remember changing a lock on one of my doors. What a huge pain in the *** that was.
There is a small clip holding the rod to the handle IIRC, along with the two small 10mm bolts. After that you just have to manuever it out of the door, I think. Just be careful. If it feels like it's stuck... it probably is... so take another look from as many angles as you can.
