doh! my radiator or worse?

well I was one of the dumb ones that forgot there was pure water in the rad when i got it and failed to replace it with coolant for winter..so you knwo that part of the story...I since replaced the water and the engine runs fine, however I have a coolant leak (that looks liek its commin otu of the bottom of the rad. btu i havent gotten a good look yet) and my Radiator light is on. my question is, does the fact that the engine runs fine and the rad. light indicate that the problem is most likely a ruptured rad, and not a break in the housings/passage caps?

My other question would be...I plan on replacing the rad with a Koyo and a black magic e-fan (yes I will upgrade to FD alternator) does anyoen knwo where I can get a good thermo sensor for the fan ( I heard the one that comes with it sucks) and where woudl you suggest putting it..(would one of the rubber hoses work or does it need to be in the housing?)

thnx for any help

I would say get underneath your car and find where the leak is coming from.....ignore the idiot lights....

As far as a sensor goes...a good universal type of sending unit can be had at partsource or the like........placement should really be in the housing or as close as possible since you want to know the temp of the MOTOR........not the temp of the rad or the hoses.....

search 'freeze plugs'; if the water in the engine block freezes, it pushes out these plugs instead of ruining the engine (or its supposed to atleast). I'd be lying if i said i knew more than that about them, but if you search you'll find more.
