When the FC was new, the hatch glass was supposed to open completely in about a second once the release was pulled or the key turned. This was because the Porsche that the RX-7 was rivaling had that same feature.

The reason that almost all FC hatches still hold themselves up nowadays (Thought they don't fly open like new) is because the power of the struts were so overkill to begin with, to push that much glass up at the speed it did. My hatch, in 75+ degree weather, pops open slowly about halfway. My other GXL used to pop open all the way in hot weather, but not very quickly.

Mazdatrix is more expensive than buying at your local Mazda parts dealer... Higher price for same parts...

Just get the serial number on the shocks and get an aftermarket replacement...

If your hatch doesnt open far enough for you to put your fingersin there and pop it, you can always close the door after you popo the hatch from inside. I always do this when I get to work. I pop the hatch, get out of the car, close the door, and the air will push the hatch open about 4-5 inches.

I bought my '89 TII new and it never opened all the way. Neither did the '88 TII I purchased new.

Maybe the TII didn't get as overkill of struts. But sorry, it was a leaf taken out of Porsche's book.

My hatch shocks are perfect. When I pull then lever, the window only pops up about a cm, just enough to get my fingers in there. Then, wherever I lift it to, it stays there. So I could get it to stay just half way up if I wanted. Or, I can get it to stay all the way up.

i like my struts, the hatch pops but stays down until i give it a little help, then it pulls itself up and holds up just fine.

If the windows-up-door-shutting-trick doesn't work, I just hit the inside of the hatch with the palm of my hand, standing outside reaching in, and it usually pops up a couple of inches.

Then you've never experienced shocks like mine that aren't "working properly". I have more control over my hatch than if it just popped up all the way on its own. Now... if it didn't stay up when I put it, that'd be a different story.

My hatch just pops up about an inch when it's released, and holds that position until I move it up, then it stays completly up. Kinda nice in my opinion.

mine usually goes up, if it doesn't, it pops up just enough to get it open all the way when i close the door or for me to get my fingers under it

While we're on the topic of hatches...is there a way to adjust the release? When I pull my release sometimes the catch on the passenger side doesn't want to release on the hatch, and then I have to either pop it with the key...or try to play around with the release to get the one side to let go. So can this be adjusted in any way?
There is a little notched piece of white plastic at or near the end of each cable (or rods... I don't remember) where it attaches to the lock/key mechanism. Move the side that is not releasing to the next tighter notch. I had this issue in my car too.

Oh, I've experienced them. My hatch, when released will pop up a few inches on average, unless it's above 75 degrees, then it'll very slowly pop the whole way up.

And you're missing the point. Brand new OEM or 'perfect' hatch struts would pop the hatch FULLY open.

I'm not saying your hatch situation makes them 'bad' or 'not perfect' to you, but they are not technically working correctly.

Case in point.
