I spend a lot of time in junkyards, I noticed this a while ago. Almost all the RX-7s I worked in smelled the same, kinda perfumey type smell.

Ya, I noticed the smell of smoke in my AE is hardly noticeable ... I assume the leather seats don't soak up the smoke as well. But damn .. you get in my N/A .. if your not a smoker it will make you think you just sat in a big *** ashtray

Dunno what this "smell" actually smells like for you guys, but I guess I'm in the same boat. I have been into 3 FCs (mine, a TII owned by a friend of mine, and a TII of a guy that I met in the Rotary Beat), and they all smelled the same.

I guess its the leather (all TIIs here have leather, or so I believe), combined with the coolant+oil+fuel smell of the wankel

Even I leave my TII without a perfume "tree" for a month, next time I get in, the smell is right there alright, waiting to be inhaled

I think the smell in my car kinda smells sour, but it's not my fault. I think it's something to do with my shifter, cause when i leave my hand sitting on it while I drive, My hand stinks. I think i need to get that thing on my shifter replaced.

I know exactly the smell.

I think it's a lot to do with the adhesives used in the sound deadening/carpet and the composition of the carpet.

The OTHER smell I think of, the "hot" one, I haven't smelled in a long time. I don't think my underhood temps get up there like they used to.

Exhaust? Just plain raunchy!

my 88 TII has leather and its not an AE.....I love the smell in mine....but the smell is gas cause im running rich....its wierd though cause the smell that i smell now I have smelled in SEVERAL older sports cars...my dad has had several old datsuns including a 510 and a 280z...both of those smelled the same (rich)....If the smell you guys are smelling is not richness, then I guess my FC is the only one on this forum that doesnt have it...I have a definte gas smell...and not the *** type

the rich exhaust smell is definatley in my car, but only when its running. usualy when i get in my car and the engine is not running, or if by some freak chance the exhaust isnt seeping into the cabin, i can smell the "FC smell". its different than any other kind of scent. you cant describe it but you know its there.

I noticed that a long time ago. I also pointed it out to my friend when we were working on some corollas. All the corollas Ive been in, have that same smell. FCs have it too. Its probably just the combined smell of all the materials inside the car. Its the worn in version of the new car smell.

yeah.... the smell.....it's gear oil.... well, that's what mine smells like anyway.....(since the rubber seal is gone and I've got an aluminum foil shift boot....

other than that, it has a very car smell.... not "new car" or anything, but smells like engines and vroom vroom (sorry for the pun) and all that good stuff

Thanks to a leaking exhaust and bad pulsation dampner when you got out of my car you smelled stronger than a truck stop gas station.

I didnt say "all TIIs", I said "all TIIs here" (i.e in Greece)

I have yet to see a TII without leather seats....

I know the FC smell you are talking about. It could be exhaust/transmission smell from ripped shifter boots but I noticed the same smell when I was stripping out the sound supressing tar under the carpet. It could be the tar material cooking under the heat of the exhaust.

Someone else mentioned the smell of a VW beetle. I have owned two of those in the past. Their smell comes from the horse hair padded seats. 40+ year old horse hair smells TERRIBLE.
