If I could choose again I would have gone single.

Then I could have spent money on something else like the suspension.

Noise? Bah, my RB catback is too silent!

for some reason im still in debate on whether i should go single or double. money being one factor, its cheaper to go with one, but I like the looks of duals. Going with one would lean more into performance than the duals. so i dont know. **** cant make up my mind. think ill flip a coin.

I do hate the fact that so many retards in civics and neons have the single. However, I think it looks sweet on my car...Corksport out the drivers side. Also, the outlet is not as hideously huge as many of the "rice pipes" I have seen.

It's really simple:
NA = full dual - headers, silencers, straight through mufflers.
Turbo = single - straight pipe, straight through muffler.

I repeat:
Turbo - single unless you just like the dual look.
NA - dual unless you are short on cash.

My logic for the "fake" dual is this

Mazda used 3 cats on the NA to get to emissions standards. using 6 or 4 cats for a true dual is stupid and would increase weight and cost a lot for minimal power increase.

However using a y-pipe they decided to use a dual muffler system to reduce the amount of work each muffler had to do. Thus making the exhaust note quieter due to the high operating RPM of the rotary engine. And the dual does look better IMO.
The reason for using the y-pipe setup was also to increase low end torque by restricting exhaust gases, for everyday driving. I think the exhaust piping actually goes thinner as you get towards the muffler, not 100% sure though.

If I had the money I'd go to true duals for sure. probably 2"-2.5" wide. But I have emissions testing and no money so I'm keepin' it stock.

I dont think single looks too bad. I have Factory header to 2.5 all the way to a High Flow cat and a Vibrant Power1 with a 5" tip. I think that dual exhaust with anything larger than say 2.25" is too much, you need some backpressure.

the exhaut didnt get thinner as you moved to the end...it used dual layer exhaust tubing. It had the steel exhaust tubing and then aluminized steel heat sheilding all the way down it, starting at the first precat all the way to the last flange that the mufflers mounted to... most parts of my exhaust system were stock when i started modding, and i was surprised to see dual layers; inner and outer shell. i took care of that problem. just ran a single w/ a light *** Arospeed N1 knockoff. next on my list is to install a collected header from Mazdatrix. should free up some extra HP and revs.

unless you are more concenred w/ your car's aesthetics than performance/speed, go w/ a single, no matter what. its lighter and simpler.

a single 2.5" exhuast is ALL an NA rotary will ever need..EVER. a single 3" is all a T2 will ever need...Ever. Hell, we are running a full 2.5" on our DSM, and its a 12 second car... i think 3" would be more than enough for a 13BT... and Mazdatrix actually told me my 2.25" is very well suited to my NA rotary, and a 2.5" is almost overkill...so you wouldnt need anything more than that. dual pipes are just added weight and complication.

hopefully we have enough info to settle this once and for all.

Dual looks way better. I, however, do have a single. My single exits on the driver side since it's actually an easier bend to make, rather than going to the passenger side. It does not look as aesthetically pleasing as a dual, but I don't really mind it. It works.

It is noticable too. My sisters park behind me, and they asked me but a couple days after I got my exhaust work done, what's wrong with your muffler? They wondered why I have this odd cut-out where it looks like a tailpipe is supposed to go. They aren't big car people, so it's not like they look at it much.

Just today I went and had Master Mufler and Brake put on new MagnaFlow straight through cans ans the sound is AWESOME! It doesn't sound like a lawnmower and it doesn't sound rice. $360 is all I paid.

Again, I would give those Mazda engineers some credit.
We are talking about the same engineers that put a thermal bypass pellet in your eccentric shaft to NOT send oil on a cold start. I cant give em a lot of credit. sorry.

Anyhow, if your doing exhaust for looks then I gotta ask what the hell your problem is. Who cares? honestly. I gotta full 3 inch single on my turboII. Full 3 inch corksport down pipe to straight as possible 3 inch piping to the driver side running through a 3 inch inlet and 3 inch all the way through that SOB. 4 Inch tip. Real nice muffler too, magnaflow brand. That damn thing is HUGE. I love it. Oh and did I mention that theres not a single damn cat or restriction in the exhaust?

What's your clearance look like when you routed that 3" under the rear driver's side control arm? My duals just barely fit the width. They stick down about the same as stock. There is a lot of room next to the drive shaft, but it's when you cross that damn IRS that it becomes a pain for any vehicle.
