Question Does removing the sound deadening actually help?

...you know, the thick soft stuff under the carpeting . I've heard it weighs ~30#s and can actually help increase performance. But by how much? .1 in the 1/4 mile?

Also, since it's called "sound deadening," how loud does it get in the car (for those who have already done it)? Do the consequences outweigh the benefits?

i just gutted my tii and ~30lbs seems a little high for sound deadening. i could very well be wrong though b/c i didnt weigh it or nothin, but that seems a little high

now when you add up the carpet and rear bins and the sound deadening and tar and trim pieces and everything then thats a good bit of weight

it might be a little louder, but if you kept the carpet i doubt it would be that noticible

also, its takes a good bit of time to take out dash and seats etc. to get carpet out. carpet would probably be a litte funky too if you put it back in b/c the sound stuff kinda holds it in place and is pretty thick in some areas, so carpet might be a little loose

i say go all the way and rip everything out, but i guess not everybody wants a car like that

what about those of us who want to keep a street car but take out the sound deadening.

Would it work to scrap all of it off but residue to keep the carpet in place?

I did weigh it, after removal.. I got every little bit except under my feet (gotta keep the driver's feet from getting hot!), and it came out to 32#

i just finnished taking all that crap out of my car and i don't think it was 30lbs total. the sound deading stuff might only be a couple of lbs. if it's a street only car i would'nt bother with all the work and it looks like crap afterwards. more work than you need for no advantage in my opion. the only reason i took mine out was to put a rollcage in.
later
oh check my thread you can see a pic. i think i called it how i spent my 4th
i'll weight mine tommorrow

Although I honestly can't understand why you guys are willing to do all that work.... It's a PITA for 30#

30 pounds? I take it out for auto crosses.. it seems to me to be 15ish pounds maybe. Either way..
it's not a MOD and it should NOT be listed as a mod/... just your routine weight reduction..
1 pound, technically, will make a difference in your 1/4... but probably such a small difference that you will not notice now it all adds up though..
there is a "common" rule... every 100 pounds = .1 second on quarter mile... of course that is not a fact.. Nor is it true for every car... But if it's a sort of rule of thumb for many, you can kind of get an idea on the difference of weight reduction...

Ooops

Sorry, I read the sound deadening and thought you meant the black tar on the floorpans. THAT is 30#..

I cut my carpet out with the pads, so I have no idea how much that weighs.

ALright, i won't be doing that. My VERY FIRST auto-cross is on July 14th and i'm just making sure i'll do the best I can .

So far (in addition to mods listed) i am :

Learning/practicing heel-toe
perfecting launches
Ensuring EVERYTHING is working properly (tune-up style)
take out uneccesary ****
remove spare tire/jack/stuff
remove hatch cargo cover
finding anything that seems useless and removing it (unless it's cosmetically altering the car).

Trying to keep it as close to stock as possible

A lot of people remove all that carp then replace it with felt, because felt is very light and it wwont look so "stripped" inside.

just to set the record straight...

the hard stuff you have to chip off or use dry ice..weighs 32 lbs?

and all the felt-like insulation weighs....? The rear hatch pad is like 8 or so, i weighed it the other day.

yes, the hard stuff is 32lbs.

I have no idea what the padding under the carpet weighs. Besides, mine was soaked with coolant..
