Does my 1990 GXL have LSD? Mazda said YES!
Phoned Mazda last week to order a Caliper rebuild kit for my rear passenger brake. Anyhow 1st thing they asked was what year etc.. I replyed 1990 GXL...
They needed to know if i had a LSD or not. I wasn't to sure so i said i didn't know.
I gave them my V.I.N. # and they looked it up on there computer. They said YUP i have a LSD....
Whats going on guys... I've heard that series 5 model GXL's don't come with a LSD. Yet Mazda said i do after giving them my V.I.N. #...
Weird...

according to this: https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...hreadid=249616
the "viscous-type limited slip differential" was not an option in the 1990 GXL (which is the model I drive... so I'm curious too). The word viscous is interesting... maybe there's a different type of LSD that the GXL *did* come with??? (but that should have been listed on the page...) Let me know what you find out.

Although "technically" no S5 N/A beside the GTUs was supposed to come with a LSD, its not all that uncommon. I believe its something like if your car has both the A and B package (basically fully loaded) then there is a chance you have a LSD also.
S4 cars used a clutch type lsd, and S5 cars used a viscous (fluid) type LSD.

so the factory may have thrown LSDs on some cars even though it wasn't officially an option? I've heard of stranger things, I guess.
Anyone know a quick way to test if my car has a limited slip?

sometimes there is a tag on the differential that says it has a LSD. and to only use that fluid or something. not sure which models came with them like that because the one i swaped into my n/a didnt have a tag. and the one on my t2 doesnt have a tag. but my friends n/a that has LSD has a tag on it.

I think the key here is that we are talking about a Canadian 1990 GXL, not a US car. Maybe the canadian cars came with an LSD. The US spec cars did not.
Also, I don't think the 89/90 cars had the random parts that can be found on the 86 (and early 87 Turbos) and 91 cars because production was either starting or ending. Some of those cars have parts they were not "supposed" to have or vice versa, but not the 88-90 cars.

And the fact if it had a LSD or not, has nothing to do with the brake rebuild kit... so why they even asked that is beyond me.
Perhaps it was an Canadian option. But no S5 US GXL models came with it (and I doubt your's has it as well).

the 90 gxl i have has the same tag on the rear as my GTUs does. its a little faded red tag that says viscous lsd fluid only! but my 89 gxl doesnt. it was to my understanding that a 4.10 lsd was an option for the s5's ????

Well i guess the best way to find out is to jack up the rear end and turn the wheels.
Hey man they looked up my V.I.N. on the computer.. I'm sure thats pretty acurate.
I'll jack up my rear end this weekend and i guess see who is telling the truth.

Sounds like a clueless dealer... but who knows... maybe Canada got a LSD on the GXL after 88... The USA sure didn't. And Mazda of Canada must have much better records than Mazda USA if they could tell if the car came with a LSD from the VIN. Mazda USA sure can't tell you that.
