does fuel make oil thinner?
88 TII
After a thousand miles or so my fuel begins to smell of oil. I know this is normal but I still can't help but wonder how this affects the lubricaiton of the oil. I have heard of people mixing kerosene with oil to purposly make it thinner (for other applications than engine use) so does gasoline thin out motor oil? If so, it seems like it would be a good idea to use a higher viscosity rating like 20W-50. So would thicker oil help combat the affects of fuel in oil?

Of course it thins the oil. Putting a thinner liquid into a thicker liquid would do that.
However, a fuel smell doesn't necessarily mean there is any signifigant amount of fuel i the engine...and if you have so much fuel in there that it is causing lubrication issues I would think you have bigger problems to worry about.

No, I'm sure my fuel level is normal. I rebuilt my engine and I've only got about 12,000 miles on it. My oil has always been this way so I don't see it as a problem. I was just wondering if thicker oil would help the engine seals live longer.
well thats not what you asked at first. i miss understood. 10w30 is a good oil for rotary, of course depending on your climate. just use what the haynes manual tells you to use

smell to the oil and it is thinner. It is good to change oil every 3000 miles and filter
as gas does somehow get in your oiland thin it down.
I also drain the oil out of my oil cooler every 10,000 miles as that oil is left in there at
oil changes.
85 rx7 got 227,000miles before i traded for an 86 anniversery edition that got
280,000 miles and i have 86000 on my 93 and all is well.
