I have one, I wish it would turn on automatically though, that feature's cool. Although I guess if it really mattered that much I could wire it to do so...

It should come on automatically when the hatch is opened. If it doesn't your hatch switches are bad or the light is mis-wired.

both my 86 base and 87 t2 I have to flip the little toggle switch for light to come on. I know for sure on that the 86's light has never come on automatically, cause it's been in the family since it was bought off the lot in 86. maybe the auto-on light is a not too known factory option?

No. If it has the light, it should come on if the hatch is open. It should turn off if the hatch is closed.

Does the hatch open idiot light come on when the car is running and the hatch is open?

If yes, then you have a wiring problem at the switch. If no, you have bad hatch switches (and probably a bad hatch gasket as well, since when they leak from a bad gasket/seal, they tend to leak onto the latches and the the switches in the latch.

No, The hatch switches.

In each hatch latch there is a switch, that triggers the truck light and the idiot light on the dash showing that the hatch is open. This is also used by the factory alarm to trigger when the trunk is opened.

On convertibles the trunk switch only powers the trunk light and factory alarm trigger, but you can run a wire to the idiot light panel from the factory security box and add a truck open indicator

And there is not a toggle switch on the factory light. It is either a rocker switch or slider switch and all that does is, turn the light off even if the hatch is open.

I'll check them out tomorrow.

the 86 has a slider switch and the 87 has the rocker.
