Do you grind your bung?

I got the Zeitronix w/b and had a shop weld a bung into the front of the midpipe at around 5 degrees left of vertical. The down and midpipe are the 2.5" from Rotary Performance and the cat is a Bonez also from RP (who have been consistently great to buy from btw). Catback is Corksport.

Looking at the bung, it projects quite a ways into the midpipe. Is it best practice to grind the bung flush with the interior of the pipe? I have the die grinders from the intake and exhaust porting so having the grinders is not an issue. I just want to make sure I'm not screwing anything up.

Oh, and I searched but pretty much all the hits involve hating on one w/b brand versus another.

Thanks,

Jim

i would say yes personally.anything stickin into the pipe will obstruct exhaust flow, so the less the better imo. maybe not the right thing to do, but thats justthe way i see it.

I would think so long as you're not removing metal that holds it on you'd be ok, but really I think this is a question for RedR1 (a little joke, sorry).

You can.....but I'd really like to see a pic to get an idea of how in-set it is.

Personally I wouldn't (unless its extremely bad) for the following reasons:

1) The sensor portrudes into the exhaust flow anyways
2) If you grind it and don't chase the threads you're going to screw the sensor's threads right up
3) Depending on how far in it is there may not be much thread left after its ground

But post a pic, lets get an idea of what you're dealing with.

The other possible issue would be that these Bosch w/b sensors seem to be sensitive to heat with one of the vendors even going so far as to selling a heatsink. So removing all that metal would seem to result in a reduction in the heat transfer area between the sensor body and the pipe.

I'll take and post a photo later.

I wouldn't worry about that at all. But honestly that's a pretty poor job of installing a bung. I've never seen someone mount the bung into the pipe. It's always done on the pipe with a hole for the sensor to pass through.

And someone needs to learn how to control weld heat a bit better. Loads of burnthough...

Sadly Aaron, journeyman technicians aren't necessarily as focused on quality as passionate "amateurs" like yourself!

But now that I think about it, the way he did it seems a lot harder than the way you described.

Thanks guys. I'll leave it as it.
