Do Miata and Protege Steering Wheels fit on FC's?

Will any of the newer 3 spoke Airbag steering wheels that come off of the Miatas and proteges fit on my Airbag equipped 90 vert? Just wondering, cause i love the way it looks, but i still want to retain my airbag.

What are the factors to consider when swapping a wheel from a different car?

I would doubt the SRS would work properly, both being different years, and different airbag systems. Wiring, connectors, pcu, all different Im sure....I am gonna say no. not saying you couldnt MAKE it work..but Im gonna lean toward no on bolting one IN and expecting it to work...on BIG thing you have to think about is that alot of SRS bags deploy when current is either applied or LOST...depending on the manufacturer, also different systems run off different load values...meaning one bag could take a different amount of juice to POP than another..

The Miata wheels fit just fine, but the airbag systems are completely different. You could probably use a 89-93 Miata wheel with a 90-91 vert with airbag (since both systems were built by Ford) but no other airbag systems would work on a SRS equipped 'vert.

And of course you would never want to retrofit an airbag system into a car that didn't come from the factory with one.

The other issue is the later models Miata and even FD use a connector in the wheel that is different than the set up on our wheels so you may have to jimmy something up for the horn.

Umm, I wouldn't be Jimmy Rigging anything up to the Airbag system...its designed to save your life, not go off while you're sitting in the drive-thru....and about using the 89-93 Miata wheel and bag for the 90-91 RX7...Ford didn't have anything to do with Mazda until 93, so...they aren't made by Ford...using the same bag, I don't know..

ah no... If you look at the airbag CPU on the 90-91 'verts and S1 NA's (miatas) you'll see that it was made by Ford.

and the jimmy rigging would be for the horn... not the airbag

and Ford has owned part of Mazda (25%) since the early 70's, so why wouldn't they use it....

Don't you remember the ford curior pick up of the mid 70's??? that was a Mazda B series pick-up.

What about all the Mustangs, rangers, and f150s that came with a Mazda R-type tranny just like the T2???

Just because ford didn't own 40% of mazda until 93 doesn't mean they didn't share parts or have parts made for them. I have seen alot of mitsu parts on our cars, why can't an airbag be made by ford.

What about the 88-? Mazda MX-6 which shared the exact same engine, frame and transmission as the Ford Probe?

That wheel will fit, however the air bag will not function correctly.

That is a new low impact airbag that is not compatible with any system built before the late 90's

How do you know the wheel will fit Icemark? How can we figure it out for ourselves? (let's say we don't care about air bags)

because Mazda uses the same steering wheel spline on the NA, NB (Miata), FD and FC.

so if we just take the air bag out of the Maita wheel, it should all bolt up, right?

i'd guess that you could leave it in there just not hook it up to anything so it'd just be sitting in there.

I personally would not attempt to use or dis-assemble an airbag wheel, way too much chance the thing can go off, even without being hooked up.

Explosive devices have no place in steering wheels for cars, and are only there because of the lameos that can't use a belt properly.
