Do i really have an s4 t2 motor on a s5 t2 car

theres been a conflict between forum members that my engine is a s4 and some say its an s5 but with s4 parts..huh..lol

here i post a pic of my engine and pic of the little black piece next to the fcd
please help me find out what motor i have

maf-s4
dash gauges-s4
pressure sensor-n318

my car is a 91 t2...i think the people who owned it before me replace the engine with a s4 t2

S4 AFM and an FCD.. yep you might have an S4 engine there..check the oil metering pump if you see a rod that leads to the throttle body...if you see a rod then its really an S4..but from the AFM alone its a good sign that its an s4...

it would take alot of work trying to make the S4 engine to work with S5 or vice versa..jst doing the rewire is a nighmare, most likely you have an S4 car...i think you can tell my VIN #....

oh no my vin came out correct 91 t2 everything in my car is t2 the only thing is my engine, i am 100 sure that they switched everything due to no knowledge in engines

because when ever something happened to their 7s they would just tell their mech just make it work

Someone went through a lot of trouble...

Next to the air filter is an Zenki fuel injector resistor pack.
Next to the boost sensor is a Zenki idle mixture control pot.

I would look under the passenger side kickpanel - do you see a lot of splicing?
If these guys ran all the Zenki wiring harnesses, it was a BIG job!

No way the VIN plate could've been swapped?

There are a lot of ways to tell, of course you have stated the obvious. AFM, Resistor Pack, OMP. Also you could look at the TB(throttle body) and see the TPS(throttle Position Sensor) S4=1 sensor, S5=2, Also the exhaust manifold on an S5 has four bolts in a rectangular pattern, S4 they arent square... one's slightly off square... mmmm, The oil and water lines to the turbo are diff too?...

I really don't see the problem with the s4, although I've HEARD that the s5 is a better motor, but I've also heard (merely here say) that their rotors crush under too much PSI... above 20ish... High comp rotor, and high boost = crushed rotors... Correct me if I'm wrong...

Just have fun with it, also you can get an RTEK if you want a little more juice out of the S4...(don't remember the ecu #)

The EFI system appears to be 86-87.5, including the EFI harness (injector resistor pack, 4-pin MAF sensor, variable resistor). It's seems very unlikely that someone would go to all that effort with an S5. Even if you had to use an S4 engine in an S5 for some reason, it'd be easier to fit the existing S5 electrics to an S4 engine than to swap the whole harness and all the sensors for S4 ones. It seems far more likely that your car is in fact not a 91, but an 86-87.5 with S5 body panels and one rather dodgy previous owner...

maybe the eomp just pissed them off too much?

Even the fuel pump relay has the round S4 connector instead of the square S5, this would mean they changed all the harnesses in the car.

In our "how-to's" we just put up a page for decoding your VIN, you might want to check it out. www.banzairacing.net

is the knock sensor in the S4 or S5 spot? that could tell you whether your short block is S4 or S5. But, I think you're better off checking the chassis for things to tell you whether its an S4 or S5, like the lower control arms (s5 balljoints aren't detachable), sway bar end links (s5 are balljoint style and made of plastic). Also, how do you know they didnt switch from S5 n/a to S4 t2? that could make more sense.

i bet its an s4 car with s5 body pieces... too much work for someone to do that cleanly and with a loss of performance.

a way to settle this, if both rotor housings have NSU WANKLE stamped on them both, chances are its an s4, untill 88-89(im 85% sure) mazda didnt own the patitants to the wankle, so they were stamped with nsu wankle (i beleave above the MAZDA 13B imprint...)

That won't tell us anything we don't already know. That the engine is an S4 is perfectly clear. It's the age of the car that's in question.

Shouldn't the car have the VIN stamped onto the firewall next to the wiper motor, and not just the dash plate and door sticker??

I know mine does. That would have to be sanded down (not likely) or filled in with bondo to conceal.

I'm with the rest of the crew, too many signs of S4.

that has to be an early zenki with s5 TII VIN badges all over it...

no one in their right mind would do all that work to an s5 TII just to drop the value with a lesser engine. they would, on the other hand, pass an early s4 TII off as an s5 TII to jack the value up a couple thousand dollars

Sorry, but you have a 91 N/A that has been converted to a TII with S4 parts. If it were a TII it would have been JM1FC332... or 334....

Quick off topic question here...

Is the FCD that little black box Spliced in just off the Boost sensor bolted on the Shock tower?

I love Technical Lingo!!!!
