87RX7Miami-- your's is a base, the sport package added 15" 5 bolt wheels-- same as the GXL model. 14" alloys were a option on the base, std were steel 14". AC was also an option that year on the Base, Sport, and LX pkg.

Yelow RX-7-- Leather was only an option on the 87 GXL. Probably have seats replaced afterwards, or by the dealer. Std on Base, Sport, and LX was "Striped velour", while the GXL got "Patterned velour"-- leather as an option. Turbo model had "Twill upholstery"-- whatever that is.

You apparantly have a base that someone replaced the seats in.

The leather was also an option on the 86 Luxury which came with sunroof, power mirrors, and 14 inch phone dial wheels and leather was also an available option on the the 86 GXL.

The power mirrors are the determining factor on the 86 models with the 14 inch wheels. The base didn't have them, while the luxury did.

Sorry for bringing this topic to the top but at least I did a search
Anyway my question is my 86 doesn't have power mirrors, but does have 5 lug bolt configuration as well as cruise control. there's no power mirrors or sunroof though. When I bought it it had rims on it so I don't know what diameter it came stock with. The seats were also reapholstered, with what I assume to be similar previously on them (matches the side doors) So is mine the base model still as I originally assumed or do I have the gxl?

So, my 86 with pwr mirrors & phone dial 14" wheels is the luxury model? Mine doesn't seem very luxurious....

One would think the lux models would have all the toys

It did, it came with power mirrors and alloy wheels, nice cloth seats, locking storage bins, 100 watt 4 speaker stereo... all very luxury items back 15-20 years ago.

what do you want for a car that was only $12794 (base price) new?

If you wanted Luxury and performance then you needed a GXL.

If you wanted just the nice extras you got a Luxury.

If you wanted Sporty but didn't need the luxury you got the Sport.

If you could only barely afford to get into a RX-7 you got the base.

Thats all there was in 86.

I have the '86 luxury also, but locking strage bins? Don't have that that I know of. Mine's red w/ burgandy cloth interior....have to replace that....fades. I have the 4 lug dial alloy wheels and turbo on the 13b, but i think I have an aftermarket moonroof. Bought the car 5 yrs ago w/ 86k miles for $3k, great deal! It now has 186k miles and runs like new, thanks to reg. maint. Oh yeah, it's still 100% stock, but won't be for much longer....

I,ve been lookin at upgrading parts, but I keep running across the 86-88 model non-turbo. I have an 86 that apparently has turbo, did mazda put out an 86 w/ turbo or not? If not, I suppose someone has replaced the rotry in my car before I bought it.

Thanks

I have the 86 base. Original owner was my dad, I got it from him in the fall. 4 lug wheels, no P/S, has Air. No storage bins, no sunroof, no turbo. Maroon ext. w/maroon cloth seats/interior. I am adding cruise by next weekend. Rotorballs, if you have 5 lug wheels, it looks like the conversion was made before you got the car. Looks like the roof and seats were done as well.

How would I be able to tell if the wheels were converted? This guy wasn't a performance nut and probably wouldn't have gone to the trouble, so I'm not so sure about that

Regarding cars that had aluminum hoods...it's VERY RANDOM!!! Early cars were more likely to have them as well as the 89-91 TII's and GTUS models. Basically, if you have an aluminum hood, count yourself lucky.
