DIY BOV - video and pics

I finished my DIY BOV!! Hooray for $6 Home Depot mods! It's not that amazing, it just has a nice blow off noise that isn't loud at all in the cabin, but outside it's quite nice. With the sunroof open, it's purrrrfect. Here's a crappy video of the sound at night. You can barely hear it with my crappy camera over the exhaust.

Jack's DIY BOV video

Oh, and for those who were following my fog light situation, there's a pic of my happy foglights in this album (as well as my turbo timer and BOV that i did that day): pics

if you want the best effect, you shoudl flip the bov hose to get it pointing towards the cabin. just zip tie it to one of the about hangers. Voila, a nice loud bov for under 10 bucks.

That wasn't very loud... I like

What pressure do you have it set to release at?

what parts did you use?

Doesn't look too bad. I have done a Home Depot BOV once, but I used different parts. I used a plastic plumbing valve, some screws, and some rubber hoses. Worked great and had a nice WRC-like fluttering sound when boosting ~8-10psi.

I don't want it to be that loud. I like the fact that it's louder with the windows down and I don't have the sound (too much) when the windows are up.

I can't find where I spelled it wrong...

No, it's not, but it's just loud enough! As I said, the video doesn't make it sound too loud because the camera sucks.

No set pressure, that's not the BOV's territory. The BOV just vents. I used the stock BOV with a check valve.

Check this out: instructions
Honestly, I tried to use the instructions but found them confusing because of the lack of pics and the parts being the wrong sizes. It took me two trips to home depot cuz i got the sizes in the writeup only to find out that they're all wrong! I just pulled off the L tube and the stock BOV and brought them to HD the second time in my friend's car. I measured right up to the actual parts and got it working well.

Home Depot List of parts:
1/2" brass check valve (blow hard against direction of flow to test for minor leaks)
3" long 1" black tube
1/2" threaded plug
5 screw clamps that close to 3/4"

1. Remove L tube and BOV (and vacuum line to it).
2. I used the threaded plug to close the whole in the TID and clamp it to keep it in.
3. when apart from the car, I put the BOV together with the check valve with the black tube and 3 clamps in this order: L tube->BOV->check valve.
4. Attached the phallic assembly to the same place the BOV was mounted before, only tilted up (so the flap is closed) above the intake and facing the front of the car (so it would not woosh too loudly.)
5. Double checked to make sure air flow was going out, not in.
6. VROOOOM..PSHT!!

YAY, i did a write up!!

anything over stock boost that thing isnt going to be sufficent to get rid of enough air to to be 100% helpfull aginst compressor surge. the stock bov will only handle about 2psi over stock before it becomes ineffective for releasing pressure.

I did something along the lines of that many years back when I had my TII. I replaced my stock TID with a much better flowing peice, that I had purchased from K2RD. The problem I encountered is that there was no inlet on the new TID for the blow off valve to vent into.
How did I resolve it you ask?
By placing a god damn sprinkler head on the venting side of my BOV. It maintain perfect vacumm at Idle, and it produced a very, colorful sound.... not unlike that of a budgie, or a sparrow. It was fairly reliable as well. I would go through springs here and there, but a new sprinkler head only costs a few bucks. Although it was very cheezy, it worked fine... which was my only concern. It was also good for a few laughs.
adios

I was thinking it would have a hard time venting anything but stock... what if I got a larger one? you guys think that would do it? I think so. I only plan on boosting about 10-11psi on the stock turbo.

There's no real point in open venting the stock bypass valve other then to make noise.

You really shouldn't stick a check valve in the path of the venting air. All that does is restrict the airflow and reduce the ability of the valve to do its job properly.

If you want the stock BOV to make some noise without compromising its performance, read this article about a much better way to do it.
