Distinction Btwn: Detonation/Pinging/Backfiring, etc

I have been experiencing a more then usual between-gear popping and what not from the car. And i wanted to make sure it wasent a bad thing. Does the fact that i need to replace my spark plugs have any effect on backfiring or anything worse?
How would i know when i am detonating and not and not just igniting unburned gas through my tail pipe?

I know for sure that i pop flames ALOT..i have my friends counting how many flames come from my exhaust sometimes on the higway...lol

I know the car is in need of some tuning...i just want to know what i should be looking out for...

The sound of pinging or knock......do this. Buy a can of starter fluid. Now start your lawnmower. Rev the engine on the mower while spraying starter fluid into its intake. That's knock/pinging.

If you don't have your acv installed and working with the airpump.........there is a good chance that is what is causing the backfiring. Or maybe the timing is so far off its letting unburnt fuel into the exaust and kabang, pop, pow.

Or you could have a bad rotor seal letting excess gas into the exaust causing kabang, pop, pow.

Or bad plugs, wires, stuff.

One last remark: The acv has a decice in it called a *anti-afterburn valve*. Under deceleration, the vacuum in the manifold opens a valve in the acv which in turn allows fresh air into the INTAKE manifold......to prevent backfiring. That's the only time the acv lets air into the INTAKE manifold. The rest of the time it sends air to the exaust ports or the splitair pipe.
