Disassemble the shift lever assembly?

I have a s5 shifter and a s4 shifter. The problem is, the s5 doesn't fit my s4 **** and the s4 has no bushings. I want to take the bushings off of the s5 shift lever and put it on the s4. Is there a way to actually get the shifter off of the bottom part (with the ball on it)? It looks like they may be machined together somehow.

I tried to search google, here and my haynes guide, but no avail.

TIA.

What do you mean when you say the S4 has "no bushings?" The bushings (which sit in the extension housing - what you screw the shifter into) are the same between the two shift levers.

On the s5 one there's 2 round plastic washer type pieces. On the s4 there's none of them.

I will snap a pic later and post it. The car and trannys are in a different location.
