Difficulty Of install. Clutch+ Flywheel

Hey everybody, Well its time for a new clutch for my 90 TII. I was thinking of going with the ACT street/strip clutch and i figured while I got it all taken apart i mind as well throw a lighter flywheel in there. but there is one problem. Ive never done this before. So my question is this. With the right tools, which i have. and a couple of guys working on it. How long and with how much trouble should I be able to get this done? Anyone whos ever done this before got any tips on this? Any info would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks

Jerry

Don't fuggin' ask. People will tell you its a little complex, you need basic skills, etc. etc.

The only way to learn about cars is to get into and pitter-patter. Just give yourself 8 hours, and keep some bandaids, beer, and trans fluid on hand. Keep the motor in gear for the reinstall. Follow the manual, you'll be fine.

Just give 'er!

Get the flywheel locking tool from mazdatrix so you can get that huge nut off.

Don't forget pilot bearing and seal. You'll need a puller to remove this.
Just found it to be a pain in the *** to get to nuts on downpipe with factory cat and ABS. There's locks on the nuts. Loooong extension with universal.
I had a problem when I went to put trans back in. Back of engine too high, because of no play in motor mounts. Had to raise front of engine so back would drop down far enough to slide trans in straight.

ACT clutch kits come with the pilot bearing and the throwout bearing, as well as seals if I'm not mistaken.

That was the biggest problem I had too. It was almost impossible to get the tranny back on the engine. I had to lift the front of the engine and finagle (sp?) the tranny on.

i had changed my clutch in my 87 na. it was so easy. I had changed clutches on meny FWD (I4 and V6) and RWD (mosly v8's) the clutch in a 7 is very easy.. but i did not remove my flywheel that may be an issue.. 54mm? i knew that bolt was big but damn 54mm... What is the torque value for that 300-325ft/lbs (off the top guess)

Its up around that number I haven't looked in a while. Go to sears and buy a 2 1/8" socket. works fine

dont know the torque value off top of head but i know mazda use a torque convertor to get it moved.....here in the real world a good quality socket and bar plus large scaffold pole will do the trick......

Yep, a 2.125" (I just had to be different ) does the trick. Plus plenty of leverage to break the nut loose. I used one to put on my 9.5# flywheel. If you're going through the effort to drop the tranny, you might as well change out the flywheel. It's well worth the effort, whatever flywheel you choose.
