Differential Oil question
Differential Oil question
I recently pulled my diff and welded it. put oil in it while it was out. Put it back in and was great. till i remembered i forgot to replace the axle seals. Started to leak and get low on oil. b4 i parked it the diff started to whine under acceleration. did do that when there was a lot of oil in it.
I replaced the seals with my diff in my car. doesnt leak. kewl beans. buuuut how to i refill it? cant put it in the axle whole bc it comes back out at a point. even with the car tilted. its filled up to the very botten and 2nd drain plug up. i noticed a lil nut out something on top of the back of the diff when it was out and figured that may be a fill plug. now its in the car and theres no way of getting a bottle of gear oil up there. do i have to run a hose and pump it up? or what? also is the whining from low oil?
thanks

The diff has two plugs on the back: fill and drain.
Drain is on the bottom. Keep that one closed.
Fill is halfway up the case. With the car level, remove that plug and then pump gear oil into the case until it begins to overflow. It's something like 1.6 quarts. Reinsert fill plug. Done.
I hope that this welded diff is track only. Very unsafe on the street.

it is filled up to the 2nd plug (plug thats bout in the mid of the diff) but still whines. i dont accel hard/drive hard on the streets and i drive slow in the rain with it so it aint bad.
Quick thread jack> I am wondering why my open diff did this while trying go back up without the drive shaft hooked up... It would roll to a certain point then like lock up and stop. I don't know much about open diffs and since I had no intentions on reusing or selling it we just pushed the car back with it popping every few feet. I'm sure it wasn't at all good for it but we needed it out of the shop and have no wheel dolleys to prop them on.

Did you hook the electrode to the case and weld the spider gears? If so, all that welding current went through the bearings to get to the spiders, and you've just damaged the whole thing.
Just something to consider when welding on cars...

I think he had it clipped to one of the 4 bolts in the casing that holds it all in.
holy crap... do people not read the faq thread which has links to the factory service manual in it?
if you go with a turbo LSD unit you will need turbo half shafts and a modified driveshaft. if it's a non turbo LSD it is a straight swap from the same series car, if it is a different series LSD then you need the appropriate half shafts that came with it.
