Differential carrier swap info

My differential carrier is leaking pretty bad. I was wondering if I can put any S4 carrier on it and swap the flanges to match my propeller shaft? I know on first gens alot of parts are swappable, I hope the same is true for FC's as well.

Car is an 87 T2

Can I just replace the oil seal without rebuilding the entire diff carrier? I looked through the FSM but they just give you the entire procedure. If I can just swap the seal. that would work. I don't have a press, so thats the issue.

Step 1) GET THE FSM

You need to remove the lock nut, washer, and companion flange to have access to the pinion seal. You may need to get creative to get the nut off, but the rest is straight forward.

I can get the nut off. I've got a good impact wrench. could I do it on the vehicle. cause if the tires are on the ground the flange shouldn't move. I've got the 88 FSM. I don't think it will be too off from the 87.
