different years, different starters?

this kind of relates to my last post, but a friend gave me this starter and he said it was off an fc, when i tried putting it on my 88 se it didnt fit, wtf

(the one on the left is the free one my buddy gave to me, the one on the right is off the car)

NA manual has a different starter , labelled N326

turbo manual starter,, and all s4 auto starters can interchange
numbers are N318 ( turbo ) and N327 ( auto ) , the N327 has the longer body and is in fact a high TQ upgrade for manual turbo gearboxes
