Difference between DC and AC timing lights

I'm getting ready to give my engine a once over. Change the plugs, check timing, TPS, etc. I have an old, maybe older than me, AC timing light, but for our engines we are to use an DC timing light. I'm just curious what the difference is between the two and how using one or the other affects timing.

LOLI know HOW they work, what I want to know is what is the difference in the output it creates that we are told to use a DC gun rather than an AC gun. If I use an AC timing gun when I'm told to use a DC will the AC create a different output than DC
