Get a haynes manual, or go to the online Factory Service Manual .
Here you will see the method for checking the oil sending unit.
Does your alarm go off behind the instrument cluster when the oil level doesnt register?
Have you removed the guage cluster to check for a bad connection?
Dont run the engine until you are positive about the oil pressure gauge!!!

as far as dying ast idle you may low compression on your engine. a guy selling his rex on the canadian forum has the same problem, and thats what he said was causing it in our correspondence.
as for the oil pressure...... dont know if its related, but who knows.
