did my engine overheat

So i was running my car earlier just checking for problems, and i believe I have a faulty thermostat. The engine got up to 3/4 on the temp gauge and i shut it down and left it off. The overflow tank was getting really full and I had coolant leakng from the radiator cap. (Has an auto radiator) I ordered two 16psi caps and a 180* thermostat amd gasket from rock auto, but should i have gone with the mazda thermostat? I just knew i had to buy replacements because those were obviously no good
