I just bought a 1987 fc t2 with 200k miles with a rebuild with 60k miles...guy put rollcage and has a momo seat. car body was nice condition i payed 3500 he was asking 4000. after i got car, went driving around with friends ran fine for all day then about 5 hours later car dies....wont start again come to realize it overheated the hose was almost melting.....and the water pump my friend says is bad.....do u rx7 owners think was still good buy? i wanted a rx7 relly bad and i looked for very long time...just wanna know if that sounds reasonable or if i got fuked thx for u time

well, if it hadn't overheated i'd say it was a decent deal, since it did, who knows. if you poped an engine, well rebuild time

thats too bad....

doesn't sound like a terrible deal though..an S4 with a med. worn rebuild, rollcage and probably a few goodies you haven't noticed yet for 3500 bucks...not bad

its just too bad you didn't have a 10" lighted water temp gauge with an air horn that comes on after 195 degrees

Thats a really good deal. Hope you didnt blow a seal. Do a compression check on the motor just to see where you stand.

get it rebuilt and get it rebuilt right. you will be so happy, sometimes i wish i got a miata when electrical stuff fails but then i drive it and im like "why miata i already have one impractical sports car"

all 7's are impractical sports cars heck all sports cars are impractical. if you bought this 7 without the thought of rebuilding it someday well you are crazy for that.

That very bad, its only supposed to be up to 1/4. But get a mechanical guage first to confirm the temp.

Look do this... Add water till its filled to the neck. Now start the car with the rad cap off. If you see water pouring out with many bubles, then you have a coolant seal problem... Another thing you can do is start the car and run it for about a min. Shut it off and pop off the cap and if you hear pressure being released then you have a popped seal.... O BTW this has to be when the engine is completely cold...

Yep, good advice. With it going to 3/4, I bet its at least a little messed up. If not, consider yourself lucky. If it is, then you get to rebuild it. Make sure you talk to several people that say nothing bad about the rebuilder, I learned that the hard way. Also, don't skimp on the rebuild, you'll just regret it later.
Anyway, even if it is blown, its not too a bad deal, espeially if hes done anything to it.

Over heating a rotary doesnt mean instant death like everyone says. Mine over heated 8 times for diff reasons. Needle pinned and coolant boiling with a puddle under the car. Not once did it worry me nor did it cause any problems. Alot of others say the same thing. Just a few people loose their seals from over heating and everyone says its a horrible thing to overheat a rotary. hmmm

What saved you was that you stopped when you noticed
but run that **** without water for a lil bit and see how long those rubber seals last you.

Theres more to it than just frying seals. You can crack the coolant passages and warp the housings as well. People say its a bad thing to overheat a rotary because its a bad thing to overheat a rotary. Just because you happened to get lucky and not kill your engine doesn't mean you should undermine the problem for everyone else.
luckily, it seems that he didn't damage his engine either, which is because he noticed it before it had been too hot for too long.
Oh, and not to discredit the guy that is looking at your car, but make sure you have talked to people that have had their cars worked on by him first. Just because they can work on a rotary doesn't mean they are honest and trustworthy.

Its good you found someone reliable. When I fried my engine from overheating it, I took it to a guy in Austin who totally screwed me over. He gave me the runaround for 4 months until I finally gave up and had it towed to San Antonio, where it was running in 3 days.

I'm pretty sure that everybody I've talked to said half way is where it normall is. Mine has been like that for as long as I've owned it, about 20k miles, now has 60k or so and it's fine as far as i know.
