TX Did it blow up?

The car is finally looking nice and last night I got the exhaust welded up so I don't have an open header any more and took it for a drive. It sounded fine, revved smoothly (I only took it to 6700), and drove pretty well. I drove it around a little bit and then went to the gas station to get a drink, letting the car idle to charge the battery that was dead.

I came out just in time to hear the engine cough once and die. I ran back to the shop and got a jump pack and it started up but ran really rough, after idling for 10-15 seconds it smoothed out but won't rev past 1500rpm. It will go up and if you hold your foot on the gas it'll surge between 1200 and 1500rpm and doesn't have any power. I limped it the block back to the shop and parked it. I'm just curious if something big died or if this sounds like an electrical issue. I'm a full time mechanic but new to rotories, the car is an '88 NA with 246,000 miles on it. I think it had an engine replaced at some point but don't know when. I have no history on the car but got it with clean oil and brake fluid but no power steering fluid in it, so the maintenance has probably been spotty at best. Any help is appreciated.
