Did all Sport packages come with an LSD?
Did all Sport packages come with an LSD?
Hey everyone, I have a '87 RX-7 Sport and it has a limited slip differential. I was wondering if all the Sport optioned cars had these?
Sport option package, the GTU of the '86-'87 rexs.

The 86-87 Sport package car is NOT supposed to have a limited slip differential. I'm not saying that yours doesn't, but its not supposed to according to Mazda specifications. Mada made a lot of mistakes and or production changes during FC production so it is possible that you got LSD by mistake. There are a lot of cars out there that are supposed to have aluminum hoods but don't, some cars that sre supposed to have power steering but don't and other weird stuff. Here is what is supposed to have an LSD and not:
86-88 Base/Luxury Package/SE = No LSD
86-87 Sport = No LSD
88 GTU = Clutch type LSD
86-88 GXL = Clutch type LSD
88-91 Convertble = No LSD
89-90 GXL & GTU = No LSD
91 Coupe A, B, C = No LSD
87-88 Turbo = LSD (Don't know what type)
89-91 Turbo = LSD (Don't know what type)
89-90 GTUs = Viscous type LSD
All automatics = no LSD
Hope this helps. If someone for sure knows I am wrong, or can tell me what type of LSD the Turbo has. Oh by the way, if your 86-88 has a lot of miles on it, the LSD is probably not working anymore :-(.

It has 76k original miles so I think I'm okay.
Let me know if this is an accurate way to test if you have it or not, by jacking up the car so that both rear wheels are off the ground.
one spins: no LSD
both spin: LSD
This is something my friend and I tried. (he has an '88 GXL and both his spin=LSD?)

But I thought that verts had LSDs. I've been told they don't before but also seen that they do before or some.
there might be some usefull stuff here.

as for spinning one wheel, I'm not sure, but I think its:
if one wheel spins and the other goes the oposite direction = no LSD
if they spin the same way = LSD
but I've recently learned that different LSD types will respond differently, so check out that post above.

Greg,
I have to disagree with you on a few models.
From what I've seen/read/heard/personally experienced, this is the breakdown of what got LSD:
86-88 Base/SE - open
86-88 Sport/GTU - clutch
86-88 GX/GXL - clutch
87-88 TII - clutch
88 Vert - open
89-91 Base/GTU/"Coupe" - open
89-91 GXL - viscous
89-90 GTUs - viscous
89-91 TII - viscous
89-91 Vert - open, w/viscous option(?)
These are for manual tranny cars. Auto's were all open diff's, as far as I know.
From what I understand, all Sport models SHOULD have come with clutch-type LSD's. I know mine did. For 86, anyway, one of my RX-7 books says, "A multidisc limited-slip differential was standard on all but base models."

yes the GTU did, but it was a different beast than the Sport. GTU models even had power mirrors and tinted glass.
Here is a window sticker to prove the sport thing:

And here is a factory POP on the 86 models. Notice how the GXL mentions a LSD, but it is missing from the Sport description.
