Question Diagnose this turbo......

Helping a local guy do some work on his Rx7.. Its an s4 t2 and we ran into a problem with the lower intake having a crack which led to us removing the turbo and I found that the turbo looked like this inside... Appears to have gotten stupid hot, or it has breathed in some rust colored air.. Can you guys think of why it would look like this.

Besides the oil caking on the outside, the turbo has next to no shaft play and functions properly (boosts well).. Just trying to stop other problems before they start..

Looks like the nut that holds on the compressor wheel rusted and moisture transferred the rust and stained the compressor wheel.

hook a bag of blasting media to the turbo inlet

take a wire brush from a small caliber gun cleaning kit and see if you can get rid of any of it. maybe try soda blasting. soda blasting isn't super abrasive and will wash away with water. of course, after you rinse it hook it up right away and get every drop of water OUT.

Yeah, it looks like it sucked in some water, then sat for awhile. If everything moves freely I wouldn't worry about it, and just clean it up. Take off the compressor housing to get at the fins.

i wouldnt worry about it. if it worrys you, i would just use some cleaning solution and air dry it. dont scrub it as it could take away metal and make it off balance.
