Determining LSD type w/o dissasembling it

Thats what i want to know, any way to tell what kind of LSD (clutch or vicious(sp))I have w/o taking it back apart? I can go as far as pulling the output halfs and drain plug's, but i really dont want to take it all back apart and have to buy more fluid

Well, if it is an N/A:

The vLSD has unequal lenth stub shafts while the clutch type doesnt have that problem. But you dont want to dissasemble it. :/

I belive the FSM has different torque locking specs for either of them, but I'm not 100% on that.

with a clutch type, the LSD should grab up when you try to spin one tire ( in the air ) and i don't believe the viscous will do that. someone correct me if i'm wrong, i am just regurgitating information i have read here.

I know all that with the faq's..

This LSD is sitting on my shop floor assembled, i dont rember which year/model car it came from

It is a turbo one though, i am sure of that

If you turn one shaft, the other does turn in the same direction, so its a clutch type?

^That just means you have a lsd, viscous does that aswell from what my experience is. Look for a part number on your differential or something then plug that in at a mazda dealership, that should be the easiest way.

On the bottom of the pumpkin, is the base solid, or split in 2 like a deer hoof? ( Like where you would jack it up from if it were in the car..) S4s has the solid flat base, and S5s were split. S4 = clutch type, S5 = viscous.
