Dead fuel pump?

Ok I parked my 86 rx for like and hour when I came back the would not start, when I was cranking the motor I didn't hear the fuel pump...So I got out my handy dandy jumper wire and jumped the connect under the hood,I then ran to the back of the car to listen for the grinding of the pump...Nothing! My question is this...if the relay for the pump went dead would the pump not pump when the connect is jumpered? Or dose the connect bypass the relay..I have another fuel pump ready to install.I just want to make sure I'm on the right track...

Do you hear the relay click when you jumper the fuel check connector under the hood (key already turned to ON)?

This very day, I saw at RadioShack, a digital meter for $14.00. Buy it and disconnect the fuel pump connector and see if there is 12v approx at the Big Blue wire at the connector (the one coming from the front of the car to the pump connector.

Before doing either.....look at the ENGINE fuse in the crew compartment and replace if required. It's on the third row from the bottom, second one from your left.

You NEED to download the Fuel Section of the fsm which is online for free.

Today I went back to the car with a new $160 fuel pump in hand.First for ***** and giggles I rapped on the top of the fuel tank, then I pulled the gas cap off and cranked the engine..guess what? The stubborn bitch started! This leave me at a total loss as to explain what caused the fuel pump to crap out for a short period of time.I thought that once a fuel pump craps out that's it?
