Dashboard Noise/Radio Problem

Yesterday, I could not get into the driver's side door of my '86 GXL. In removing the door trim (from inside the car-PITA!!), something must have shifted in the instrument cluster and now I get a constant grinding sound that seems to be coming from somewhere in or under the dash. I did a forum search and could not find anything on this subject.

(The door problem was the typical 2nd Gen locking mechanism plastic coupling broken--I will not lock the car again)

Additionally, for some reason, my radio also stopped working when I got everything put back together. What have I done?

Thanks in advance.

OH NO! Not the grinding noise! I'm sorry buddy but you're gonna need a rebuild.

hehehe; sorry, I'm bored. We are going to need more info from you. What year and model? Which stereo is in it? What exactly did you do to the door or dash area? When does this grinding happen? When driving; when idling? Tells us everything you know about the situation. Where is the noise coming from? Does it make the noise with the door open?

The radio is not working probably because you blew the room fuse when you took apart the door (but again that is gonna be determnined my model and year).

Easy to check. Does you have dome lights in the door?

If yes, you may have blown the room fuse.

Is the dome light in the car working?

If no you probably blew the room fuse, which the radio needs to work.

No blown fuses--I think I have an open in the 13.2V supply to the radio (type 3).

As for the grinding, it is constant whether idle or not, coming from the dash. Strange.

Constant grinding may be your air mix motor (i think that's what it's called). The damn thing that adjusts where the air goes. Have you had any trouble with the heater or AC? Will it blow air out of the front vents then out of the top vents if you press the switch? Will the air redirrect itself if you want it to?

As far as the radio goes. You may have grounded out the speaker wire running to the door (if you have door speakers). That would most likely shut the radio down.

Are you leaving out some details about what you did to fix your door? I just have a hard time believing that after working on your door; the radio doesn't work and you got a grinding noise from the dash.
