Damn... my car hit 8000 rpm!!!

I downshifted in second and floored the gas pedal in neutral to get the good rpm match like usually, but the pedal stayed to the floor and the engine reached 8000rpm for like 3 sec.!!!

I want to see what made it stick, but I have one question: If I press the gas pedal while the engine if turned off, will it flood the engine? I know flooding problems are a nithgmare with rotaries and I don't want it to happen.

So I'll just drive like a grand-ma until I fixed that problem.

Thanks for any help guys.

No holding down the pedal while starting prevents flooding. As far as I know.....but I'm still sleepy.

Pressing the gas, with the engine turned off will not flood the engine.

Pressing the gas pedal while the engine is off will NOT flood an S4. There's not even any fuel flowing when the engine is off. The pedal trick only works when the s5 is minorly flooded. I had to pull the EGI fuse under the hood just like a S4 when I short-started my car in the rain to pull it in the garage to replace the waterpump. Now, a leaky injector may flood the engine while it is off, but that is a COMPLETELY separate problem from flooring the gas pedal while the engine is off.

If you do flood an S4, pinch the fuel line with a pair of plyers and crank it. Most of the time it will start.

no pull out the egi inj fuse under hood then turn the key, hold for like 10 seconds, let the car sit for 5 - 10 mins, insert fuse and crank it right up... doesnt work the first time then u follow all step again ive done it many times

something like this has happened to me before, except my floor mat... for some reason slipped up and onto the gas pedal... holding it down... my damn floor mat just lost all its grip with the spikes on the back and won't stay in place.

No.

As for the sticking, don't forget to check your throttle body itself, it may just need some cleaning and/or looobing.

I hit 8k rpm in 2nd at autocross because I was losing time shifting to 3. Let off the gas, let out a huge cloud of oil smoke. Good times.

I hit 8000 rpm the other night. Took it like a champ. No worries here.

My bet is the carpet.

I did mine on purpose.

Ummm, I thought fuel cut was at 7800 on s4's. Anyway, it shouldnt be a problem. I took mine to 7500 all the time with no problems. It had a large street port so it actually made power there, if your wondering why I did it.
As for unflooding, install a fuel pump kill switch. It does the same thing as pulling the EGI fuse, and you dont have to move to do it. It also makes for an anti-theft mechanism for stupid thieves, and loads of fun when you have it at a shop and they cant start it.

I did get it to 8k, but I was concentrating more on the road than the tach... seing as I was going sideways at that moment in time. But I didn't feel a rev limiter at all.

Allot of stuff has been said in this thread hehe.

Pushing the gas pedal when off on key on does not do anything on fuel injected cars. this is an old rant from back in the carb days when you push the gas pedal the fuel accelerator diaphragm is pushed. This squirts fuel into the car. Hence the reason you pump the gas once or twice before starting a cold carbed motor.

On our FI cars the only thin chain with the gas pedal is the throttle linkage plates. When you push the gas pedal it turns the linkages in the TB. On S5 cars if you hold down the gas pedal when cranking it does something. I am not up on S5 to much but I believe it is the fuel pump it disables. I do not know on S5 but on the FE it disables the pump for 5 seconds.

Pulling the EGI INJ fuse cuts the EFI system off it stops spark and fuel delivery. his is used to try and sling fuel out the exhaust or removing the L plugs and cranking to spew the fuel out the spark plug hole and exhaust.

If your pedal got stuck it was either the cable flipping over and binding on the linkage arm or like RR said it probably got stuck on the floor mat or carpets something like that.

There is no fuel cut outside of over boosting.

Really? Because I thought the rev limiter was at 7800 for s4's. Or does it limit it some other way.

I hit 8004 according to my SAFC on my last run at Deals Gap this year. We were filming it at the time and you can hear the buzzer going off in 1st and 2nd quite a bit. I've narrowed it down to two possible spots on the DVD but anyway you look at it the car was still pulling strong and seems none the worse for the wear.

Now that I think about it, I hit the buzzer just about all the time that weekend. Wish I had checked the SAFC more often to see what I had hit on the runs.

No, the buzzer comes on before redline (6500 or so on s4's) to remind you to shift. There is definately some sort of rev limiter as I have hit it before on a missed shift. It is somewhere around 8k or a little before. I'm not saying its fuel cut, but it does limit the revs somehow.

Anyway... yes there is supposed a limiter at 7800 on S4s... (to the best of my knowledge). But I have accidentially much past 8k on my stock tach on a misshift. The needle was at the high-beam indicator. The car was all stock at that point.

Keep in mind that stock tachs aren't all that accurate.

As far as the sticking, do you have cruise control? My cruise control cable got stuck one time... when I was redlining 3rd gear street racing a BMW z3. I beat him but then I put my flashers on (then pulled over), not because I was being a ricer, but because my car was actually fucked up

The buzzer kicks in at 7000 for me and i 'think' the limiter was 8k...it may have been 7800. This is on an '87 GXL, but i doubt it would vary much from car to car.

Mine stopped right about 7800, actually. I guess my tach is pretty acurate. Its all a mute point now, though. Its not even running now and itll be megasquirted once its broken in.
