damn idle... i've tried it all, give me pointers!

Friggen idle is buggin the hell out of me, im trying to get this thing to run at a steady 800rpm but no way in hell is this happening.

Found a couple vac leaks wich turned my 2000rpm idle to about 1200. Just like before, the idle goes from 1200-1400rpm every second, jumping up, then down within the second, incredibly annoing!

I have done the following

-Adjusted tps (read a perfect 1kohm, to 5kohm sweep) its brand new btw
-Adjusted TB idle screw to 0, still high idle
-The AF idle adjustment screw (the electronic one beside the AFM) does absolutley nothing. It was played with before i bought the car, so im playing with it now to see if I can get it right. I tried turning it to lean, and then to rich, and then about 10 turns to rich, still nothing.

All I can think of is that when I took apart the TB, I fucked with the throttle plate adjustment screw located on the opposite side of the TB. I tried to adjust it with the car on when I realized that the screw is facing the bottom of the engine! I'll have to take the TB off to adjust it.

What I don't understand is what causes the rpm jumping? I was so sure it was gone when I bought the new TPS, doesn't look that way tho...
Finally im getting alot of white smoke, I know what this means, but it gets interesting. It defenitly is coolant, if I hold my hand in it, it gets moist really fast and smells like nothing, like water. While the car was getting to normal operating temperature I opened the cap and checked the coolant, couldn't see any. So I filled it with the car running up to the rim. I watched it, the coolant did not move, it was not circulating, it was just sitting there. What I was looking for was air bubbles, I saw none. Every time the throttle increased in RPM, the coolant rose up to the rim, and then down about an inch, this was consistant with the RPM. But there were no air bubbles, and the coolant was not 'flowing' at all.

Theres smoke coming from my manifold, wich I still cannot determin from what. Looking as best I can from the engine bay its coming from the underside or something, but I cannot see any cracks or anything. Maybe a bad gasket? There is also smoke coming from the bottom of the rad, not sure why!??! Im guessing its hot on the bottom and coolant is leaking from it (the rad is pretty beat up). Although I cannot see any coolant leaks when the car is on or off below it?!?

Im gonna read through the idle guide in the archive, just check it over. Can any of you think of any ideas as to what the hell is happening? lol, im confused as hell. All I can think of is that becuase the idle is still high, the computer is confused and trys to compensate with fuel or something, causing the idle to jump? maybe?

-Why is the coolant not 'flowing'
-WHy is my idle jumping at 200rpm increments?
-The idle only starts to jump once it reaches full operating temperature, temp gauge just below half.

Not really concerned about the high idle, just the fact of white smoke, coolant not flowing, and jumping idle. The high idle, like I said, I believe is associated with the throttle plate position screw on the opposite side of the TB.

I have removed all the emissions, I have also had the injectors cleaned professionally. Plugs are new, wires are new. The intake was also completley cleaned up. Theoretically, my car should run perfect given the things I have done to it.

If you could throw up some ideas, much obliged

BAC and AWS still on the engine??? Try unplugging them an capping the input to them off and see if that solves it.

You have checked timing as well I am assuming?

BAC and AWS is completley removed/capped off. I forgot to mention, I apologize

Timing huh? this is the one thing I have not touched on the car at all. I have no idea how it could make a jumpy idle, but its worth a look. I'll pick up a timing light tomorrow and check out the haynes.
thx icemark!

Just curious, but why in the hell don't the turbine housing come out of the factory with a wastegate mount? Its so much better there.

I actaully went and advanced my N/A a few degrees and noticed that idle went up ( I adjusted via the tb for the addition) but the idle is alot more stable with the advanced timing, for me at least.

Interesting. I still havent done the timing, I don't have any damn time

But yea, as for the post about the wastegate, totally unrelated, was meant for another thread...

I'll be doing the timing adjustment and a complete rework of my oil injector vac lines, cause I think those are causing a leak. Im going to zip tie the rubber (I made my own spider out of very small fuel line) line right to the injector and make sure its sealed. THen im going to do some 90degree bends on the hose (use the little 90 degree vac line plastic adapters) and run it nice and square up from under the manifold and around to the plenum where it connects. Just little things and such to make sure everything is good.

Hopefully I can get this floaty idle freakin resolved..

I'm curious too about these issues of jumping idle and coolant situation

my situation is exactly the same

can someone add some more information about this?

Agreed, I want to know what is causing it as weel so I can get mine to stop. I have a new TPS coming, but I suddenly feel less optomistic about it after reading this thread.

My car does the "idle dance" but only when I full throttle it before it is warmed up. My GSL-Se used to do it really bad if I didn't wait for it to warm up. My idle is also screwed up, but it seems to change with the outside temparature. I've thought about buying another intake from ebay just to swap parts. New parts (like the tps) are too expensive.

Im positive its timing guys. I know this now becuase advanced timing can give a high idle, and a high idle can dance.
When i was looking at the timing needle on the front cover, it was bent forward, obviously this was to make it easier for the previous owner to advance the timing.
I just put everything back together and sealed it all up really well, there should be no leaks of any kind now, vacuum, water or exhaust
will post my findings in this thread when i start her up.
