cutting manual mounts out for auto to 5 spd swap

Ok so I have done the swap and had no problems with the custom mount I made but im going to be getting a lot more power soon and was wondering who all had taken the manual mounts off a 5 spd car and had them welded into there car. How should I go about cutting them out are there spot welds to drill through or do I have to cut a big chunk of car out? What all has to be done as far as prep for welding them in and where could u get it done? If any body knows anything bout doing this let me know thanks!

You're going to have to remove the carpet and other trim around the tunnel so you don't catch your interior on fire.

I'd like to do it in mine, I have the donor car just sitting there. I'm unhappy with the amount of movement my trans has now. The adapters put a pretty hefty couple on the mounting point acting in a longitudinal direction, which it was not designed for.

I'd just take them out any way I could. A torch would be nice, but an air chisel or snipper would probably work too. You could always cut them out dirty with plenty of material around the mount and then clean it up later.

My question has always been how to tell where to put them on the auto trans tunnel.

if you look where the manual mount goes, there is slot or grove you can see. approx 6-8 inches closer to the front

there are some pics on the cardomain page below in mi sig.

Man, that crossmember looks pretty stiff! Thanks for the tip.

Are you still running stock rubber mounting pads? I think that's a pretty big source of movement in the trans too.

I never minded until I drove my FD with urethane drivetrain mounts. I can't get the shifter to move at all on that puppy. I'd like the FC to feel the same... just need the time to do it.

You'll probably have to pull the trans, don't know for sure though.

If you have to ask, pay someone else to do it. Welding sheet metal properly takes a bit of skill and should not be a first welding project.

That said, standard meal prep applies. The mount can be easily cut off the donor car with a cutting wheel or by drilling the spot welds. Clean all paint and grease off of the areas to be welded and remove the carpet from car to be welded on. Disconnect the battery as well.

I used a cutting wheel to get the mounts out. And as for welding them in right spot bolt them up to the tranny push it up so its flush in the tranny tunnel and mark where they should be, real simple.
