cutting the hood skeleton?

i got rid of my t2 hood (going fmic) and i'll be getting a stock NA hood, but i might not have the cash for an aluminum one... so in that case...

has anyone cut the skeleton out of their hood? could you notice a difference in how heavy the hood was after?

eventually, i'll be making a reverse scoop hood out of it.. so ill be cutting the skeleton anyways....

lemme know

cheers,Dan.

I tried it on an extra hood I had.... its very wobbly...

I did notice a bit of a weight difference, but not as much as I was hoping for... maybe like 7-8 lbs at most(including the hood latch and everything). and for how annoying it is to prop open(or to work under when its open) and for how long it took, its not really worth it. just cut out the section where you'll be making the reverse scoop.

is there a way to block the hood scoop when running a FMIC? I think the turbo hood is the sexiest thing that car has

There is.

RE Amemiya makes a insert that blocks the scoop off. Looks real nice IMO...

some of the S4 TIIs had alum TII hoods also. but some also had steel.

I've cut the skeleton on an NA hood and made a reverse vent. It was wobbly at first but then i re-enforced the bottom with fiberglass and it fixed the problem.

make a fiberglass copy of the skeleton before you cut it off, then fiberglass it on after you cut the skeleton off.

if you can do that much, just make a fiberglass copy of the whole hood.

I cut the frame off of mine, it wobels over 80 mph and when I drive past an semi truck, but, it doesnt wobble any worse than it did with the skelton in it, but I have 2 reverse vents which I assume stablize the air under a bit

all t2 hoods are aluminum except a few very rare ones. also JDM cars were all turbo and the lower models were steel, many of those (like mine ) have made it to america through bulk importers.

but why would you bother to block off the turbo hood scoop if you didnt have the intercooler? what is it hurting? whats the gain?

1.) i made $350
2.) more of a sleeper with an NA hood
3.) my friend thats raced mazda's for about 15-18 years said that the t2 hoods dragged the cars down as opposed to the NA hoods...

thats all i can think of right now

anyone know where to buy the vents?

i was thinking of just riviting it onto a hood with a hole cut out.. like my friend did with his corolla:

A friend of mine picked up a tii hood and he said it kept his tranny cool - the shifter boot stayed at the right temp.
And blocking it off would also mean less cold air getting to the engine.. why would you want that?

from what i hear, for people w/ a front mount.... the air coming into the engine bay from the scoop, and the front of the car, the air tends to fight each other and linger in the engine bay....which is why they have reverse cowl scoops...so the air goes from the front of the car, into the engine bay, and out through the reverse scoop..... also another reason why people raise the back of their hoods, to let the trapped HOT air out of the engine bay..........
