cut exhausts at y-pipe flange - is this safe?

Hiya, well I couldn't wait to buy a pair of exhausts, so I just decided to saw off the exhausts right after the y-pipe flange (so I can give the "someone stole my exhausts" story to the police). Anyway, my question is, since the y-pipe is pointing up, should I be worried about sparking something near my gas tank? I've looked at my tank and I saw no dis-coloration or antying. I also touched the tank immediately after I was done driving for about 70 miles and it was not hot or anything. I noticed that the angle at which the y-pipe are pointing, if flames get shot out, it will be directed into the area at which the exhausts used to reside.

So am I gonna blow up?

thanks in advance
