thats kinda gay, oh and guys, everyone that was saying my car is going to bend in half b/c i have no support in the center, well it appears i do, i took a good look at it today after work and theres a box tube running under the side/center in each side, the welds look kinda, "eh" but i think it'll do good for now, anybody have any idas on how i should lay out frame support when i re-do it, i was thinking about X bracing each side with 1 1/2' steel or chromoly tubing. i can weld ARC and MIG but i might try to find a good TIG welder hand have them do it. i was also going to connect it to the 3-poit roll bar as well, then after its all done have the chassis cleaned and some parts chromed, maybe

oh and uh gull wing rx-7 = buy a Delorean you shitgoose, then put a 13b in that!

This is getting off topic for this thread, but I have had the idea in the works for about 5 years. The other guy just ripped me off. Definitly turbo, and not the wussy stock turbos. I have a very specific plan in mind.

haha, a 20b in a delorean, sheer madness, the original DMC motors are gutless, switching to a 20b would be awesome, send pics

something struck me as an idea earlier, i saw that Speed Machine Performace does custom fabrication, i was on their site looking at the carbon fiber N/A hoods (for weight not carbon fiber look, it'd be painted to match car) and i was thinking, what if i had the top re-fabricated out of carbonfiber with a fiberglass or aluminum frame, and then i also though about ideas to connect all four of the latches together witch cabler assemblies to onw lever for easier opening, then have it lined to match the car and painted as well, that'd be so awesome, especially if it ends up weighing half as much as the current targa top (which is kinda heavy, and difficult to take off/put on with one person) the only things that present a problem is i'd probably have to let whoever does this job, keep the car for a few weeks, and well i'd imagine it'd be expensive as well, but i'm not easily swayed (i'll take out another loan!)

Honestly it is not worth spending the extra money for CF if you end up painting it. CF is kind of for the Bling show off factor(me == guilty )

It's going to weigh as much as FG and is a little stronger but you won't see the benefits.
It will cost ALOT for CF anyway.

I've been working on a CF headlight cover and materials alone for a small 10x10 headlight cover will cost me in the range of $50-75 WITHOUT gelcoat.

FG will be much cheaper and will get you the same product for what you need.

I don't know any Composite fabricators in the valley but you should be able to just give them the current targa top and they can make a mold of it(might be cheaper this way).

They can then make the top layer and then fab up an under frame.

yeah the ting is the top thats on their now isn't perfectly cotoured to the rest of the roof line, the inside of the targa has a rail in the center and since there isn't two more the roof line kinda sinks a littleo n each side of that support instead of being a smooth arc al the way across matching the rest of the roof line, i guess youd have to see it to understand anyways, i'd like to see pics of your car sounds like a beast, youve already seen mine, hopefully i can get some of my major mods done soon, (i NEED my racing beat full exhaust system!!)

I can't remember any off the top of my head but try googling composite, resin, fiberglass, and carbon composite.

I think there is a company called Fiberglast which has a good info site and prices.

I recommend you go to Checker and buy a small woven cloth pack and some resin to test first.

Once you know the characteristics of FG and the set time for the resins you should be able to get it done. It isn't that hard. Other than getting rid of bubbles during setting it isn't that hard.

A roller and LOTS of rubber gloves and plastic cups are a must.
Here's a pic of my car so far.

You should join www.AZRX7.com
There's a lot of us here in Tucson and Phoenix.

not to preach,, but you NEED to know if there are any sub-frame connectors. rx7's are uni-bodys and if it's not reinforced could be very hard to drive in a straight line.
the roofs/windshield brace more then realized. a non-sunroof car is stronger the a sunroof car. the verts windshields are braced as is the center section running towards the rear fenders. that rolbar is taking on alot of stress but doesn't brace the car, lenght wise. just easy driving is enough to whack it. remember this ... pay attention to how the doors align or if it gets difficult to open or close the doors. the minute A door doesn't align stop driving. it could happen today, or 2 weeks from now, theres no telling. you know nothing about , or how the person went about doing a removable section (roof) to the car so untill you see for yourself if it's braced be carefull. no really, get under there and see. but thats a good looking car.

Looks like he has it under control. Since everyone else is offering suggestions, I will offer mine - if you decide you want to paint the car, I'd swap to convertible doors and fill in the rest of the c-pillar where that part of your existing doors stick up. Other than that, I think the car looks great overall. It's definitely a nice idea that doesn't make the car 'ricey' (jury's still out on the door scoops). You've got me wondering if I should do that with my FD now

haha thanks, yeah the door idea has been a though since i got it, it's not getting paint for a while though because when i do it i'm taking everything out of the car and having it acid dipped and re-done, so its going to be a while, i dont like the triangle window thing on cov. doors though, but yeah thanks for looking, and yes the door scoops are a little questionable but the last owner was a ferreri guy so you can't blame him really, he took good care of this car and it only needs a little bit of TLC.
